JOB DESCRIPTION

To provide welding engineering services in support of manufacturing and quality functions at Weatherford Huntsville and other manufacturing locations as needed.  Conducts welding engineering activities and projects to (1) train welders and welding operators, (2) welding process audits and (3) develop manufacturing processes for fabrication, overlays and hard surfacing and develop. 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Analyze engineering designs for welding requirements and translate these requirements into manufacturing process procedures.

Has responsibility of coordinating multiple projects and directing outside test laboratories and contract welding facilities.

Plan, conduct, track and report welding engineering investigations.

Review subcontractor welding procedures, processes and documentation in order to determine that applicable welding code and design requirements are satisfied.

Oversee welding procedure qualification and generate welding procedures.

Investigate new developments in the field of welding to evaluate their application to improve or remedy existing welding processes.

Provide welding engineering services to fabricate equipment in accordance with all applicable code and customer requirements.

Provide training of welders and welding operators, document training and maintain qualified welder and welding operator list.

Communicate on welding engineering issues inside and outside Weatherford.

 Provide technical support with industry standards and specifications such as ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, AWS, API, CSA, ISO and NACE.

Prepare welding process specifications.

Assess skill levels of welders and welding operators.

Coordinate failure analyses and root cause analysis on welding related issues.

Prepare welding related training programs and deliver same to Weatherford and/or customer employees.

Travel to other Weatherford locations to provide training and onsite welding engineering assistance.

Work and cooperate with Engineering, Office, Vendor, Customer, Laboratory, and Shop personnel.

Provide internal welding engineering consulting services.

Know and understand Weatherford Quality Policy and comply with all requirements of the Quality Systems Manual, Operating and Technical Procedures and Workplace Instructions.

Must understand and comply with all safety rules and company policies of Weatherford.

Work assignments carried out to the highest quality level.

Perform various other duties and activities as assigned by supervisor within the physical constraints of the job.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Proficient in use of computer work processor and spreadsheet software.

Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing through memos and reports.

Understanding of mechanical and structural components as it relates to welding engineering assessments and recommendations.

Must be able to work well with others in a team setting.

Ability to work independently.

Must be able to effectively handle concurrent projects.

Knowledge and practical experience of common welding processes such as SMAW, FCAW, GMAW, GTAW and SAW.

Experience in welding carbon and low alloy steels, stainless steels and nickel-based alloys.

Knowledge of AWS D1.1 and ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code Section IX

Fundamental knowledge in NDE; ability to categorize & quantify weld defects

Knowledge of quality systems.

B.S in Welding Engineering or related discipline.

Experience in training welders and welding operators

2 years minimum experience as a welding engineer

The physical ability to immediately respond to emergency situations.

Preferred:

Knowledge or experience in the Oil and Gas Industry.

Specific experience in welding 718 nickel base alloy and the 13%Cr family of stainless steels.

Knowledge of laser and friction welding processes.

NDE experience.

5 years' experience in oilfield welding.

AWS Certified Welding Engineer status.

AWS CWI (Certified welding inspector)
