The Shell Polymers Monaca Site, formerly known as Project Franklin, will be a world-scale petrochemical plant in Western Pennsylvania that upgrades locally-produced ethane from Marcellus and Utica shale formations gas production to make polyethylene. The petrochemical complex will consist of a world-scale Ethane Cracker Unit (ECU), multiple polyethylene (PE) units, PE logistics and supporting OSBL (utilities, general facilities, storage, and hydrocarbon logistics). The FID (Final Investment Decision) was made in Q2 2016 and the project is now in Execute Phase. As construction of the site progresses, the site is now growing to support Commissioning and Start-Up activities and prepare for full operation in the early 2020s.
The Site is located in the Pittsburgh, PA area (Monaca, PA). Not only we are building a world-class asset, but also we're building a world-class asset organization. This position is critical to the mission of team, and this will promise to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
The position will work in the Engineering group within a combined department consisting of: Engineering, Maintenance, Projects and Turnarounds. As part of the Penn Chem Plant Asset Team, the position will report to the Rotating equipment/ MEC Manager.
The successful candidate will provide specialist field support through Commissioning and Startup (CSU) in support of the "One Team" delivery model between the Asset and the Project. Prior to CSU, it is important to note that the successful candidate will initially support Construction in the Project Team (P&T), then transition back to the Asset Team (Downstream Manufacturing), as construction nears completion. During construction, this role will support construction and pre-commissioning activities by working as a Rotating Equipment Inspector and taking daily instruction from the P&T Engineering & Inspection team. Candidate will be expected to provide various support deliverables including quality assurance while in parallel learning the processes and equipment that they will eventually support during run and maintain. The role will keep close touch with their direct line. This is a unique opportunity to see the kit as it is constructed and take those learnings back into the run and maintain organization.
The Mechanical/Rotating Equipment Specialist/Inspector role is to provide technical/maintenance support to operations, maintenance, turnaround, projects and engineering for mechanical equipment. The Mechanical Equipment Specialist will work to improve equipment reliability and reduce maintenance cost via investigation of failures, determination of root causes and completion of corrective actions. Machinery includes pumps, compressors, motors, turbines, blowers, fan, miscellaneous mechanical equipment (SPMs), etc.
- Take a leadership role in assuring the mechanical activities are performed safely and in accordance with them Site safety policies.
- Operations Support: First point of contact for Operations when technical questions or issues with machinery arise (including off-hours). Assist in revising critical equipment procedures.
- Equipment Surveillance: Assist with identifying the appropriate checks. Conduct weekly (minimum) unit walk-through. Check relevant equipment pressures, temperatures, leaks, vibration, noise, lube oil (levels, condition, flow), performance, etc. Those items that may need immediate attention should be brought to Operations for correction. Assist Operations in understanding the operation of their equipment so that they can observe these items daily.
- Equipment Troubleshooting: Troubleshoot machinery problems to understand probable cause of failure and notify operating team of actions to prevent reoccurrence. Generate repair notification containing description of issue and proposed solution or improvement to address the issue.
- Equipment Repair: First point of contact for crafts for technical expertise and training on critical equipment repair. Need to maintain a collaborative relationship with the Maintenance Planner, Maintenance Team Leader, and Crafts.
- Reliability Improvement: Review monthly MTBM data, conduct failure analysis, propose solutions. Follow equipment failures on the Bad Actor list, define problem, determine root cause, and work with Engineer to recommend changes.
- Documentation: Maintain equipment history, Bad Actor list, document Overhaul Reports, and maintain equipment folders. Ensure equipment history is well captured and documented in GSAP.
- Planning: Maintain knowledge of equipment status within the assigned unit. Develop, review, and audit preventative maintenance workscopes, timing, and materials.
- Provide support for Rotating Equipment Rotating Equipment scopes for planned major overhaul and major inspections.
- Turnaround Support: lead and/or assist in workscope development, specify and inspect needed parts, develop QA/QC plan. Serves as a mechanical coordinator on special mechanical equipment jobs during maintenance outages and/or projects as required.
- Serves as a craft foreman on turnarounds and special mechanical equipment jobs/projects in the production module as required.
- Takes a lead role for the discipline in developing, planning, and executing equipment turnarounds.
- Project Support: This task may include approving detailed scopes, specifications and design review. This task will include the interaction with process engineers in project development, interaction with manufacturers in procurement of machinery, and interaction with contractors during field execution.
- Audit maintenance activities for compliance with established QA guidelines, i.e. (Machinery Repair Standards, OEM specifications, etc.).
- Provide mechanical training, as required, to Operators, Craft workers, and relief Mechanical Inspectors.
- Identifies and recommends performance and reliability improvements for the module's rotating equipment.
- Reviews parts on major/critical machinery to assure that all necessary parts are stocked.
- Reviews GSAP work tickets and operations logs to identify and understand mechanical equipment problems.
- Tracks mechanical equipment reliability in his area and publishes timely reports to communicate progress.
- Participates in the established MTBR tracking program and Bad Actor list, identifying "breakdowns" in GSAP per the global MTBM standard. Attends the monthly breakdown meeting.
- Assists ESP dept with the mechanical equipment preventative maintenance programs. Reviews PM frequencies to assure cost effective maintenance.
- Keeps abreast of current discipline standards (API, MRS, EGGS, etc.) and new technology.
- Follows work sent to the shop and outside shops to assure adequate information is supplied and the job is completed in a timely manner meeting established requirements.
- Familiar with SKF vibration program, Lube Analyst program, and Bently Nevada vibration monitors for condition monitoring of equipment.
- Establishes the baseline seal leakage rate for major centrifugal compressors (usually after a major overhaul). Monitors and trends the seal leakage rate as required.
- Generates and tracks Field Inspection Reports per the FIR procedure.

- Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.
- Associate Degree in machine tool technology preferred
- Minimum ten (10) years of Mechanical Equipment or Inspection experience
- Military experience specific to an aircraft or submarine machinist mechanic or controls system preferred
- 1st Class Machinist Level
Knowledge or Experience in the following areas is desirable
- Condition Monitoring experience (i.e. data analysis, vibration analysis, lube oil analysis, etc)
- Hands on experience in the troubleshooting and repair of Centrifugal & Reciprocating Compressors, Steam Turbines, Gears, Mechanical Seals & flush plans, ANSI / API Pumps.
- The inspector shall have a working knowledge of ANSI / API pumps, Mechanical seals & Seal Flush Plans, & Centrifugal and reciprocating compressors, gearbox, Steam Turbine applications experience.
- Causal Learning Investigation Method.
- Performance monitoring of equipment.
