Job Description

The Commercial Representative position is an individual contributor role that requires a moderate to broad range of commercial acumen, inter-personal communication skills and strong leadership attributes in support of Shell's business objectives in the Permian Asset. The successful candidate would be on a multi-year career path to becoming a Senior Commercial Representative and above, if successful. This position resides in the Permian Onshore Land and Contracts function and will be accountable for the following:
  • work collaboratively across functional boundaries within Shell, including external engagement with commercial partners, mineral and surface owners and state agencies,
  • engagement with L&C management as well as Technical Asset Managers to understand and act on business priorities, risks (including mitigation measures), and opportunities,
  • review newly acquired oil and gas leases and associated legal instruments to assure the purchase of valid leases and identify obligations,
  • establish and maintain accurate oil and gas contract records to assure the continued validity of leases and compliance with contract terms,
  • review producing leases for well status and if production ceases, collaborate with Lease Administration to advise operations what is required to maintain the lease,
  • prepare title reports as needed,
  • assist in property divestiture and acquisition projects by managing due diligence from both sides of a transaction,
  • taking a leadership role in mentoring and coaching less tenured L&C staff and support more senior L&C staff and
  • contributing to cross functional complex commercial initiatives and projects.
  • Dimensions
    This role is a subject matter focal point and is accountable for L&C activities within a defined geographical area and requires contributions of commercial advice and recommendations in support of business objectives regarding land and contracts subject matters across the full EP lifecycle. This role will include responsibility for leading and supporting engagements with internal and external stakeholders as well as meetings and engagements with joint venture industry partners. This role will involve leading and supporting contributions towards:
  • Lease play trends and current market values.
  • Oil/Gas Lease agreements and key provisions.
  • Aspects of title abstracts, curative and clearance activities; and
  • Lease administration and division order processing. Requires the ability to:
  • coordinate and manage lease take-offs, onshore lease plays, drilling and development clearances, and lease and records due diligence,
  • evaluate, prepare and negotiate a wide range of commercial and operational agreements. The Commercial Representative will have good interpersonal communication skills, computer skills, analytical and evaluation skills and organizational skills, in order to meet the objectives of the Asset without delay. This role requires hands-on exposure to leading and supporting commercial transactions and/or land and contracts operations desk experience, including growth and collaboration across functional boundaries including, but not limited to the following: (a) commercial support for a certain geographical area within the onshore US to acquire, develop and/or divest of EP assets and provide commercial advice to Land Management, (b) Understanding of oil & gas accounting issues, COPAS and Property Administration, (c) Solid knowledge understanding of US EP oil and gas commercial agreements, contracts (JOAs, CA's, Participation Agreements, Pooling Agreements, Unit Agreements, Production Handling Agreements, Farmout/Farmin Agreements, oil and gas title/curative/abstract, oil and gas leases, surface use agreements, (d) Enterprise First Team Behaviors, (e) Ability to perform in a fast paced, sometimes intense working environment, (f) Management of Contract staff and eager to mentor less experienced staff, (g) Collaboration with multiple functional disciplines (e.g. technical, finance, tax, legal, property administration), (h) Understanding of complex lease terms and obligations to ensure lease preservation, (i) Travel and field assignments are expected for training and as business needs require, (j) Support in identifying and mitigating project risks and (k) Strict compliance with 12 Life Saving Rules, Code of Conduct and Business Principles.

    • Bachelor's Degree related to Petroleum Land Management or Energy Management/Commerce is strongly preferred or Business, Marketing, Finance, MBA or Law Degree.
    • Must have a minimum of four (4) years of hands-on L&C experience and knowledge with negotiation and practical day-to-day experience regarding lease acquisition, exploration and development agreements and projects, title curative, surface use activities, title curative/abstract experience, contract drafting and interpretation, cross-functional integrated work ethic, potential for leadership and ability to manage internal and external stakeholders.
