REPORTS TO: Chief Electrician
DEPARTMENT: Maintenance
LOCATION: Offshore Newfoundland
TYPE OF RIG: Semi-Submersible

JOB SUMMARY:  Assist the Chief Electrician in the installation, maintenance and repair of all electrical equipment onboard the vessel


  • High School Diploma or Equivalent. Work experience and demonstrated ability of oral and written communications may be substituted in lieu of formal education

  • The  candidate must have successfully completed an appropriate course in industrial electrical technology at a recognized training institution, and apprenticeship experience and/or additional training to the equivalent of that required for a Canadian inter-provincial journeyman's certificate

  • 2+ years experience as an Journeyman Electrician

  • 2 + years offshore experiences on Semi Submersibles.

  • Advanced Computer Skills

  • Valid medical examination and vaccination certificates

    • Must pass Physical, Drug Screen and Background /Pre-Employment Screening Checks.

    • Must have Basic Survival Training, H2S Alive, First Aid, WHMIS 2015, Fall Protection and Confined Space Entry, Hazardous Area EX Training

  • Perform daily inspections and maintenance on electrical equipment

  • Comply with the permit to work and isolation systems

  • Carry out periodic maintenance according to the Rig Maintenance System (RMS) guidelines and coordinate that maintenance with supervisor and other department heads

  • Maintain, troubleshoot and repair all power generation and distribution equipment, i.e. generators and engine controls, SCRs, switchgears, transformers, etc.

  • Assist with the maintenance and repair of general rig equipment such as HVAC system, refrigeration plants, communication systems, lighting, etc.

  • Carry out maintenance and repair on electrical components of drilling equipment, i.e. Driller's console, DC drilling motors and auxiliaries, Top Drive System, drawworks, mud pumps, etc.

  • Carry out maintenance and repair on electrical components of marine equipment, i.e. thruster motors and auxiliaries, ballast pumps, control panels, cranes, etc.

  • Install new equipment as required with regards to electrical wiring, fixtures and junction boxes, etc.

  • Assist in performing and interpreting power calculations power factor, insulation tests, and positive relay tests as required

  • Study and understand electrical schematics as required

  • Maintain an adequate supply of spares to fulfill maintenance requirements; inform Chief Electrician when there is need to reorder

  • Inform supervisor and other department heads of any technical problems or limitations that may affect the safe operation of the rig

  • Assist with the implementation of outstanding recommendations from audits, as issued by Clients, Regulatory Authorities or Rig Management

  • Ensure that reports for repair and maintenance of equipment are accurate and complete

  • Assist in supplying information for maintenance and repair budget

  • Communicate equipment problems or breakdown information via direct supervisor to Field Support Group

  • Incorporate the THINK process into all tasks, whether working alone or as part of a team

  • Participate in the START process

  • Call a Time Out for Safety (TOFS) whenever and unplanned hazard or a change in the expected results is observed

  • Carry out assigned duties in a safe manner according to Company policies and procedures

  • Actively participate in weekly safety meetings and pre-tour meetings as required

  • Report any incidents, potential hazards or abnormal situations to supervisor and other department heads

  • Respond to emergency situations as per designation on station bill

  • Ensure that all relevant safety procedures and practices are adhered to during mechanical maintenance work

  • Assist in ensuring that a high standard of hygiene and housekeeping is maintained onboard to the rig

  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements for environmental protection


  • Meet the training requirements according to the applicable training matrix

  • Participated fully in the annual performance appraisal process

  • Assist with the supervision and training of the Electrical Trainee

  • Maintain discipline onboard and ensure compliance with Company disciplinary procedures
