Roles And Responsibilities

Fugro has recently established the Hydrography Center of Excellence at its Houston campus. The core technologies and expertise of this new group revolve around bathymetry surveys, such as hydrographic and nautical charting whereby utilizing both vessel and aircraft data collections. In addition to these existing markets, the group is focused to expand into coastal zone management (CZM), oceanography, environmental and climate sciences, and law of the sea boundary claims. Moving forward, many of the technologies being developed and assessed by the group involve autonomous vessels and aircraft applications, such as; ASV for maritime and UAV for the airborne.

With the growing demand for these services, additional staffing is now required to support the group, and our customers. Many of the existing and future projects are in support of the government coastal, oceanographic and seabed classification requirements.

This is a senior position in the team, reporting to the Director and is responsible for the oversight and success of hydrographic surveys.

Ideal applicants have a strong operational or management background in some or all the following; geomatics, GEOINT, engineering, surveying, mapping, multibeam, Lidar, survey equipment integration, GPS, GNSS, tides, remote sensing and maritime cartography. A category A(CAT-A) or ACSM accreditation is also desirable.

Operational Management experience with activities involving the installation, integrating and calibrating survey sensors would be a strong attribute, such as; echosounders (Reson, Kongsberg, R2 Sonic or Norbit), side scan, sonar, lidar, IMU (such as Applanix), tide gauge, winches, and navigation equipment.

The role will also be heavily involved in the management side of the group, whereby tracking costs, evaluating vendors, and supporting financial reports. In addition, the role will work closely with the commercial team to develop proposals and review the proposed technical approach against costs.

The following are a characterization of responsibilities;

·         Responsible for the day-to-day operational aspects of Service Line projects.

·        Responsible for project planning, including selection of equipment, personnel and suppliers (as required) as well as the development of project schedules.

·         Responsible for operational success and profitability of assigned projects.

·         Review project requirements and specifications, and prepare the project execution plan.

·        Coordinate charter agreements with new vessel or aircraft providers.

·        Coordinate and manage all on-site logistics and support vendors that will be required for the successful execution of the survey.

·        Responsible for the creation/writing of proposals in conjunction with Commercial Manager and commercial/marketing staff.

·        Responsible to review bids and proposals for Hydrography operations to ensure they are achievable from an operational perspective.

·        Responsible to interact with clients regarding deliverable and/or task requirements to ensure compliance of accuracy, integrity, cost and delivery times for all data/services such that problems and/or misunderstandings are recognized before they impair the effort.

·        Responsible to report progress, financials and client feedback to the SL Director and Financial Controller.

·        Capture and compile all lessons learned of the course of the project, and investigate how to correct them moving forward.

·        Ensure operations performed are carried out in an environmentally aware manner consistent with Fugro policy.

·         Direct and provide input to the creation of the Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) Plan.

·        Ensure all project personnel are familiar with the project HSE Plan as well as all applicable Job Safety Analysis (JSA).

·        Ensure safety meetings and toolbox talks are held and the applicable JSA is referred and reviewed.


This would be a great position for candidates with strong operations management in the offshore or airborne survey industry.

Relocation may be considered for exceptionally qualified applicants.
