ROLE PURPOSE

Responsible for the detailed design of well completions for Shallow and HPHT development wells and the safe and efficient installation of all well completions and related activities. The individual is responsible for the design of the completion, the program of work, contracting, the ordering process, inventory management, pre-make-up and testing of sub-assemblies and the supervision of installation at the work site.

In addition, the position will also interface with the Asset teams in determining the optimum choice of completion materials.

The individual must have experience in sand control completions. The individual should have experience in the preparation of the technical input to new Tenders and Contracts.

Failure analysis and QA/QC assurance for the entire well completion process is another key responsibility for this individual

 

ACCOUNTABILITIES

 

Analyze previous Completion Programmes and make informed and supported recommendations for future improvements

 

Strive to optimize the use of industry proven completion technology, with the aim of reducing the expenditure of the Drilling Department budget for new buy completion and intervention equipment, allowing the successful completion and future intervention of complex gas wells in sandstone reservoirs.

Challenge the need for each completion accessory's installation and to propose and select the most cost efficient alternatives as available.

Select the most appropriate sand control methods for Company gas wells based on data and information related to the properties of Company reservoir gas sands, Company history of sand and water production and the expected sand free gas production rates

Evaluate and propose downhole sand completion options (sand screens, Gravel Pack, Frac Pack, chemical consolidation, etc) to achieve a sand free gas production performance that will eliminate downhole failures either mechanical or reservoir related so that Company wells will last the lifetime of an expect 20 year life

Work with the Asset Team to identify the most appropriate completion mud and completion fluid to minimize reservoir damage during the completion. This will require the candidate to have a good working knowledge of permeability testing for formation damage and wellbore clean up options

Work with the Asset Team to recommend the most cost effective and efficient perforating strategy to minimize sand production, drawdown etc (including TCP, HPHT perf guns, etc)

Regularly review the supply chain for cost effective and proven technology which may offer technical or cost advantages over that currently utilized within Company.

Liaise with the members of the Drilling and Subsurface Teams to achieve clear understanding of the impact of well design.

Assist Drilling Engineers on metallurgy selection for complex gas wells in a high CO2 and H2S environment

Liaise with the members of the Drilling and Subsurface Teams to design, select and prepare procedures to install the most cost effective and efficient downhole sand completions for multi zone gas sand reservoirs in a multi well offshore platform

Participate in lab evaluation of downhole completion components (eg, selection of sand screens, premium OCTG connections, NACE testing, OCTG qualification testing, etc)

Liaise with the members of the Drilling and Subsurface Teams to achieve clear understanding of the impact of well clean up, well unloading and well start-up operations.

Understand the planned well path, focusing on deviation and directional changes which may increase the risk to successful completion and intervention operations.

Liaise and work with Well Intervention Engineers to plan and execute workovers and well intervention when required

Liaise and work with Company Supply Chain and Procurement Department to prepare and evaluate bids (for completion equipment, downhole sand equipment, DHPG, well cleanup equipment, etc) Contracts and Purchase Agreements. This will require preparation of Contracting Strategy, Technical Specification of equipment, technical evaluation of bids, compliance with essential technical criterias, and award recommendations, etc)

Propose and recommend equipment that will give minimal intervention problems, reduce the potential for work-over and have high up time in production.

Participate in QA/QC of new completion equipment. Participate in failure analysis and identify and trouble shoot failure root causes to avoid failures in subsequent completions

On occasion may be required to be offshore to supervise and train rig personnel on the installation procedures to ensure a successful and trouble free complex well installation

Promote amongst staff & contractors awareness of health, safety and environmental & risk management issues, treating them with high priority.

Assist the Principal Well Engineer to prepare budget and schedule associated with multi well rig campaigns

Collaborate directed within other teams within the SSD / Drilling Department to better understand related aspects of completion design.

Ensuring Completion programmes are compiled in time.

 

Ensuring all completion equipment is available, correct spec & in good order.

 

Ensuring End of Well reports are compiled correctly.

 

Coach and motivate for effective performance and development of skills and competencies.

 

Resolve people management issues at operational level.

 

MAJOR CHALLENGES

  • Technical challenges associated with highly laminated gas reservoirs
  • Depleted gas reservoirs prone to sand and water production
  • Well completion in highly deviated wells (requiring innovative completion procedures (eg, CTU, tractors, highly efficient boggie rollers)
  • HPHT well completion (9000 psi and 400deg F)
  • High CO2 (>50%) and presence of H2S (200 ppm)
  • High angle long reach wells (>15,000 ft, ERD ratio 3)

DIMENSIONS

  • Plan and execute up to 10 well completions per year
  • Work independently with minimal supervision.
  • SME in sand control, shallow and HPHT completions
  • Possible requirement to supervise completion running operations

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Degree in Engineering or equivalent, with a minimum of 10-year experience in a Well Completion and Engineering environment. Actual onsite installation experience will be an added advantage
  • The ideal candidate for this position is to have a minimum of eight-year experience in evaluating, proposing, selecting, designing and installing downhole completion equipment in complex gas reservoirs
  • At least 3 of the eight years of experience (see above) should have been involved in downhole sand control in depleted, multi bed sandstone reservoirs in an offshore platform environment
  • Experience in subsea completion will be an added advantage
  • Experience well intervention is an added advantage (CTU, HWU, CWR, slickline, e-line, WSU, etc
  • As Company requires their wells to be completed with a 'fit for purpose' design, he/she should also be relatively experienced in the selection of appropriate completion metallurgies.
  • He/she should be both innovative and creative in order to meet challenging well targets as identified by the Asset teams and demonstrate a high level of motivation.

COMPETENCIES

- IWCF Well Control certificate level-4 for Completion Engineers/Supervisor. Preferably have Level 5

- The candidate must be fully conversant with the appropriate industry HSE policies and guidelines & shall be expected to become familiar with Carigali Hess Operational Safety Standards and Procedures within a short time.

- Personal computing skills are essential including but not limited to working knowledge of Microsoft windows applications and Electronic mail system.

- Positive and creative thinking with problem solving skills.

- Working knowledge on reservoir engineering & petroleum technology is expected.
