Job Description

Shell is looking for a Geophysics Technical Team Lead for our New Orleans, LA office.

The Geophysics Technical Team Lead will be key member of a Gulf of Mexico (GOM) Production Subsurface Team and Production Unit (PU). The Geophysics Team Lead reports to the Geology & Geophysics (G&G) Manager and is accountable for leading, mentoring, coaching, and providing technical guidance and assurance for a team of up to eight geophysicists. The geophysics team will support brownfield development and reservoir surveillance activities for the assets within the PU, focusing on optimizing reservoir recovery, and identifying reserves and development opportunities. The Geophysics Team Lead will be responsible for the overall quality of the geophysics deliveries across the asset area.

The Geophysics Technical Team Lead is also responsible for providing detailed technical assurance for development projects, well maturation/delivery, and Well Reservoir Facility Management (WRFM) activities, as well as interpret and ensure discipline compliance with Shell's Deepwater standards and processes.

Accountabilities:

The Geophysics Team Lead will be responsible for a wide range of business and Production GP activities:

  • Ensure geophysical data available over the assets are current and adequate for business goals and that the latest technologies and workflows are employed when appropriate.
  • Provide guidance to team members' technical work via workstation sessions. Intimately involved in well maturations and operations, Integrated Reservoir Modeling (IRM) and seismic processing projects.
  • Work closely with the G&G manager and Subsurface Coordinators on project staffing, prioritization, and delivery.
  • Provide guidance and closely monitor project team dynamics to ensure integration and team performance.
  • Work closely with the G&G manager, the Geophysics Regional Discipline Leader (RDL) and Subsurface Technical Development Manager for New Technical Professionals (NTPs) training, coaching, competence assessments, and individual development of the GP staff to build technical competencies and maintain discipline health.
  • Coordination of all PU GP projects, particularly 3D/4D survey proposals, justifications, acquisition, processing, interpretation, budgets and reporting. In addition to managing seismic reprocessing and seafloor monitoring projects and needs.
  • Carefully listen to and incorporate staff and stakeholder feedback, and work closely with G&G Manager, RDL, Process Leaders and Development Managers regarding work simplification, efficiency gains, work planning and prioritization to maintain effective and efficient work environment. Feedback to the subsurface staff and leadership to build an engaged and motivated subsurface community.
  • Work with the Geophysics RDL and G&G manager to deliver Functional Improvement Plans.
  • Steer the Seismic Processing Team, the Quantitative Interpretation Team and the Areal Monitoring Team on technology needs and geophysical studies to maximize geophysics impacts to the business.
  • Budget management for the team (travel, training & expenses). Implement Continuous Improvement concepts to deliver cost reductions from well deliveries, seismic acquisitions and processing projects.
  • Supporting operating plan and Annual Report of Petroleum Resources (ARPR) to understand the fundamental volumetrics and determine need for models and additional development opportunities.
  • Support reserves reporting, forecasting, and quality.
  • Provide technical assists & reviews to peers.
  • Must be experienced communicating complex technical issues in terms that can be understood by team members, stakeholders and non-GP's.
  • Interfacing with all stakeholders including Asset and Development Managers, Process Leaders, Wells Organization, Partners, Regulatory, Subsea, WRFM and Operations teams.
  • Integrate HSSE into well planning, design and construction.
  • Support permitting & regulatory compliance - supporting producing areas, providing input into CID, unitization and comingling permits.
  • Provide key input and integration of Field Development Planning.
  • Effective interface with the WRFM, surveillance and operations teams based in New Orleans.
  • Supervision of diverse group of up to eight Geophysicists including individuals yearly Goals and Performance Reports and Individual Development Plans.


Dimensions:

The Geophysics Technical Team Lead reports to the GOM Production G&G Manager, and part of an integrated subsurface team supporting the PU. The PU team will include both Direct Vertical Access (DVA), as well as subsea, facilities and fields. The Geophysics Team Lead will supervise staff which support the PU and will be responsible for allocating the resources appropriately between assets, fields, and projects, with flexibility to move staff between the assets as project levels demand. The role sits within the Producing Assets Deepwater Gulf of Mexico. The role provides an opportunity to work on a range of geophysical and development projects and studies across multiple geologically diverse reservoirs.

Requirements

 

 

  • Technical GP with at least fifteen (15+) years industry experience, particularly deepwater production and development. The position requires the candidate to perform seamlessly in multi-disciplinary teams, staff supervision, project assurance, Technical Assurance sign-off, identify and initiate new opportunities, support multiple projects and fields, and work effectively with stakeholders including partners.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in 3D and 4D seismic interpretations. Ample experience in a variety of seismic data sets including full, wide and narrow azimuth streamer and nodal data. Proficiency in seismic attribute analysis and seismic inversion. Experience in DAS interpretation is a plus.
  • Proven record of maturing opportunities in deep water settings.
  • Extensive experience with well proposals and drilling operations support.
  • Thoroughly understand subsurface uncertainties (structural positioning, reservoir and fluid properties) and can fluently relate to business decisions at hand to guide project teams to derive efficient and robust subsurface solutions.
  • Intimately familiar with the well delivery and IRM processes and understand how geophysics interact with other disciplines - when geophysics can impact and what the limitations are.
  • Proficiency in modern depth imaging methods (FWI, Hi-Res tomography, etc).
  • Proficiency in quantitative interpretation, including AVO analysis, synthetic modeling, inversion methods, advanced seismic attributes, illumination & de-remigration studies, Close-the-Loop etc. Proficiency with QI software such as Jason, Promise and Rokdoc.
  • Solid understanding of seismic processing workflow products and latest technology. Able to conduct in-depth technical discussions and provide constructive suggestions in the course of complex imaging projects.
  • Demonstration of drive, enthusiasm and can-do attitude, open-mind and passionate in coaching and developing staff.
  • Well-developed inter-personal and presentation skills, a good team player who enjoys working in multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural development teams.
  • Clear commitment to Goal Zero and proven HSSE track record.
  • Experience in field development planning, scenario planning, volumetrics and risk and uncertainty assessment is required.
  • Experience in integrated field studies and reservoir modeling studies with other Petroleum Engineering disciplines is required.
  • Experience in WRFM roles, track record of opportunity identification and solid delivery.
  • Skilled in well planning and operations.
  • Knowledge of deepwater depositional systems, turbidite reservoir characterization and fault compartmentalization.
  • Stakeholder Management include Wells, Partners, Regulatory, Subsea, WRFM and Operations teams.

Working in an integrated team environment is crucial as the integrated team contains geophysicists, petrophysicists, production geologists, reservoir engineers, production technologists, drilling engineers, completion engineers, economists and finance reps.
