Wood’s Environment & Infrastructure Solutions business’ core competencies are in environmental assessments, health and environmental risk assessment, environmental geology (site investigation), remediation engineering, transportation engineering, geotechnical engineering, infrastructure engineering, and testing, and water resource services. We employ permanent staff in each region of Canada, including hydrogeologists, environmental, geological, civil, and geotechnical engineers, and environmental scientists and technician/technologist support personnel. Each of our regional teams is supported by local Wood offices and international Wood professional practice networks.

 

As part of Wood’s regional Occupational Health and Safety Team, the successful candidate will be working with a robust team of professionals with various technical specialties who work closely with various operations groups across Western Canada, with occasional work at locations throughout North America.

Our needs are principally in our Burnaby office; however, placement within our existing E&IS offices in Kamloops, Prince George or Fort Saint John is an option depending on your experience and skills. Alberta-based candidates may be considered for project-specific assignments.

 

Your Duties:

Wood’s British Columbia Occupational Health and Safety team has an exciting career opportunity for experienced Hazardous Materials Specialists.

Reporting to the Burnaby Group Manager, your responsibilities may include but won’t necessarily be limited to:

  • Conducting hazardous materials assessment for various client sectors including: asbestos, lead, PCBs, mercury components, ozone-depleting substances, suspect visible microbial growth and other process contaminants
  • Preparing and reviewing hazardous materials management exposure control plans and programs
  • Preparing and reviewing hazardous materials abatement and remediation specifications
  • Conducting on-site inspection and monitoring services during hazardous materials abatement and remediation projects
  • Preparing accurate, succinct written reports, programs and proposals
  • Participating in safety meetings and conduct site safety inspections
  • Supporting industrial hygiene exposure assessments
  • Maintaining air sampling pumps, monitors and other associated equipment required for hazardous materials projects
  • Keeping abreast of current industry knowledge, guidelines, and applicable legislation, interpret Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) legislation and effectively communicate requirements and responsibilities to management
  • Working with and supporting the regional and national Wood OHS Team

Skills / Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials:

  • Post-secondary education in Occupational Health and Safety
  • Evidence of hazardous materials training (e.g. AHERA Building Inspector Course, Alberta Asbestos Worker Course, Hazardous Materials Technician Course, Lead Inspector and Risk Assessor Course, Mould Assessment and Remediation Course, etc.)
  • Preferably three to eight years’ experience conducting hazardous materials work
  • Experience with industrial and hydroelectric power facilities an asset
  • Experience conducting safety- and hygiene-related work a plus
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
  • Must be willing to travel independently, often times overnight and for a number of days
  • Strong computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Enthusiastic and positive attitude and commitment to technical excellence
  • Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
  • Must be able to work as a member of a team but also independently
  • Willingness to maintain and upgrade technical skills through seminars, training sessions and continuing education
  • Strong writing skills are a must to prepare reports, proposal and other project deliverables
  • A strong desire to grow in your career with Wood
