Job Purpose
The Deputy Security Manager for UAS & Airspace is responsible for managing all airspace security operations, including drone (UAS) and counter-drone (C-UAS) systems. The role ensures safe, compliant, and effective aerial security operations while maintaining full situational awareness of all airspace activities around the project.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee and manage all airspace security operations, including UAS and C-UAS systems.
- Plan and supervise aerial security missions such as surveillance, reconnaissance, and risk assessments.
- Coordinate with civil aviation authorities, Area 4, and service providers involved in air operations.
- Maintain continuous airspace situational awareness for project activities.
- Ensure all operations comply with security procedures, VPSHR, and aviation regulations.
- Produce daily reports and analysis on aerial, onshore, and offshore activities.
- Supervise drone and counter-drone teams, ensuring discipline and operational standards.
- Ensure proper installation, functionality, and optimal use of advanced security systems.
Daily Activities
- Implement and maintain HSE (Health, Safety, and Environment) standards, ensuring full safety compliance.
- Plan and execute drone missions for surveillance and monitoring sensitive areas.
- Coordinate counter-drone systems (radar, RF detection, jamming, interception procedures).
- Manage flight authorizations, no-fly zones, and secure air corridors.
- Monitor and report all aerial activity, including unauthorized drones.
- Maintain communication with civil and military aviation authorities.
- Record and report airspace incidents or violations.
- Ensure all equipment (drones, batteries, radars, systems) is operational and maintained.
- Train teams on airspace security procedures and drone risks.
- Develop solutions and improvements for operational challenges.
- Remain available for emergencies.
- Prepare technical documentation, tenders, and cost estimates for systems and contracts.
Work Environment
- Based on-site in Afungi, Mozambique.
- Tropical and potentially challenging working conditions with long hours.
- High-risk malaria zone requiring personal precautions.
- Camp environment with shared facilities and provided essentials.
- 24/7 availability may be required for emergencies.
- Movement restrictions due to elevated security levels (Zone Orange 2).
- Rotational schedule: 4 weeks on / 4 weeks off.
Accountabilities
- Ensure full airspace security over all project areas.
- Guarantee safe and compliant use of UAS and C-UAS systems.
- Provide accurate reporting on aerial threats and system performance.
- Ensure VPSHR compliance in all airspace operations involving civilians.
- Supervise all personnel and contractors involved in air operations.
- Ensure systems are maintained and downtime is minimized.
- Maintain strong HSE standards across all operations.
Qualifications & Experience
- Proven experience in air operations, UAS or C-UAS (military, police, aviation, or security).
- Strong knowledge of drone technologies (RF, radar, EO/IR, jamming systems).
- Understanding of aviation regulations (ICAO and local authorities).
- Experience in airspace risk assessment and coordination with security forces.
- Fluent in English (Portuguese/Swahili is an advantage).
- Strong computer skills (mapping, reporting, situational awareness tools).
- No criminal record.
- Valid driver's license and passport.
