The Rig Superintendent provides overall direction and management, typically through Offshore Installation Managers, for the safe and economical operation of the drilling rig.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
|
Safety
- Demonstrate commitment to the Company safety policies by frequent discussions, review, consultations and audits made on the vessel.
- Select appropriate standards, specifications and safe working procedures including drills and incorporate those in the drilling operational procedure of the rig.
- Monitor adherence to standards, specifications and procedures and review performance of department staff.
- Ensure that staff are provided with sufficient resources and training to achieve their safety objectives.
- Hold head departmental safety meetings with senior staff. Can attend at his discretion subcontractors' meetings and regular department safety meetings.
- Ensure that incidents causing harm or damages to personnel, the environment or equipment are properly investigated using formalized, systematic procedures and that effective measures are taken to prevent any recurrence.
- Investigate near misses and dangerous occurrences in order to prevent recurrence and build a risk profile database.
- Ensure that environmental standards adhere to international and to national regulations.
- Assist in developing, testing and monitoring the Company's contingency plan.
- Report promptly to the Master any violation of safety regulations by personnel, even if such violation has not resulted in an accident.
- Directly responsible for the commercial management of the rig.
Operations
- Responsible to follow proper procedure on suspension of drilling operation and securing of well.
- Responsible to secure the well and drill plant to prevent additional hazards upon orders to abandon ship in coordination with the Master.
- Has to know the client's rules to control a kick.
- Supervises the entire drilling program and gives to his staff the orders and calculations to implement their tasks.
- Ensures that all drilling parameters are properly followed and optimizes them in cooperation with the client representative.
- Instructs all of his staff on conducting their job in a safe, efficient way.
- Ensures that the preventive maintenance is properly followed in the different departments and coordinates the repairs or the maintenance to minimize the down time in cooperation with the Chief Engineer.
- Submits to the head management the necessary overall and heavy repairs to be made to maintain the drilling equipment in a safe operating condition.
- Ensure that all inspections are properly conducted.
- Ensures that the drills are properly conducted and recorded in the files.
- Ensures that personnel are properly trained and have valid certificates.
General Management
- Keeps the Master informed of the state of the drill plant and the well, potential hazards, malfunction of equipment and actions to take.
- Plans and supervises the work to be done by the department supervisors.
- Supervises all the reports done by department supervisors and by the subcontractors.
- Supervises the implementation of the Company's procedures, standards and specifications.
- Modifies in accordance with the Head Management the procedures if necessary.
- Informs the client of the operations and of the problems encountered.
- Maintains with the client a good relationship.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS
|
Education:
- Bachelor's degree or educational equivalent is preferred.
- Management training is desired.
Professional Experience:
Skills - Technical:
- 2 years' experience as an Offshore Installation Manager is preferred.
- Supervisory experience is preferred.
Skills - Communication:
- Bi-lingual is preferred (English, Spanish, French, Portuguese).
- Verbal communication skills necessary.
Skills - People:
- Ability to interact with individuals in a cross-cultural environment.
- Leadership and employee development skills.
- Team oriented.
Licenses, Certifications, Credentials, and Other Requirements:
- Offshore survival and medical certificates as mandated by government regulations are required.
- Certified in all required safety training programs, including but not limited to underwater safety, firefighting, and helicopter underwater escape.
- Must pass pre-employment and random drug tests.
