Wood is recruiting for an Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our renewable centre of excellence based in Glasgow. We have an exciting portfolio of projects in the clean energy sector and are looking for candidates who can support our expanding engienering team.

The renewable centre of excellence is based in Glasgow; however, we recognise the value of remote and hybrid working so are open to applications throughout the UK.

The Role

We are looking for a self-motivated individual with a passion for renewable energy who has a relevant engineering degree, accredited for membership of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, having achieved or working towards Chartered Engineer status. Ideally you will have a working knowledge of multi-megawatt wind turbine technology and industry practices, and a demonstrated track record of delivering high quality assessments in the renewable energy industry but we will also consider candidates who have relevant transferrable skills from other industries.

The principal responsibility of this post is leading the delivery of technical tasks such as:
  • Technology and supplier assessments for onshore and offshore multi-megawatt wind turbines and other renewable energy technologies
  • Developing contract and technical requirement specifications for wind turbine supply and wind farm engineering, procurement and construction contracts
  • Evaluation of tenders and negotiation for such contracts
  • Inspecting, evaluating and reporting on the completion status and quality of multi-megawatt wind turbines on sites during construction and operation
  • Advising on risk and interface management
  • Evaluating and providing input to Basis of Design and Front End Engineering Design studies
  • Developing assessment tools to support technical and risk evaluation
  • Preparation of high quality technical reports for issue to clients
  • Leading and/or participating in client calls and meetings

Other key responsibilities include:
  • Supporting construction and safety management, and ensuring that contractual requirements are fulfilled through a combination of site presence, inspections and document reviews
  • Advising on mechanical engineering aspects of wind turbines and other renewable energy technologies
  • Management of projects and work packages to meet quality, time and budgetary objectives
  • Client-facing business development and project management
  • Preparing proposals, cost estimates and commercial terms for Wood's commissions

Supporting responsibilities of the post will include:
  • Witnessing inspections and tests, with occasional site engineer assignments
  • Supporting development and implementation of management processes
  • Supporting team development, including professional mentoring
  • Assisting with the development and expansion of long-term client relationships

Expected:
  • Clear understanding of engineering principles, supported by practical engineering experience
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in the English language
  • Strong organisational, team working and influencing skills
  • Understanding of relevant safety regulations, good practices and engineering standards
  • A flexible and proactive approach to completing work
  • An interest in renewable energy and / or sustainability
  • A relevant engineering degree, accredited for membership of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, having achieved or working towards Chartered Engineer status

Desirable:
  • Previous relevant working experience in the renewable energy sector
  • Working knowledge of multi-megawatt wind turbine technology and industry practices
  • Evidence of completion of engineering tasks, project management and delivery on wind energy projects
  • Experience of undertaking inspections of multi-megawatt wind turbines and their associated manufacturing facilities
  • Experience of development or operation of renewable energy projects, or transferable experience from power, offshore, or other relevant industries
  • Relevant design, manufacturing, construction or operational experience
  • Commercial understanding and experience
  • Relevant training in project and safety management
  • Knowledge of forms of contract and/or experience in contract negotiations
  • Willingness to travel (UK and worldwide), including possible site assignments up to 25% of time
  • Valid driving licence for use in UK
