SUMMARY: The 2nd Mate (500 GRT NC) executes activities assigned by the Master. Contributes to the objective that the ship is always available to be deployed in a safe and efficient manner to carry out the voyage, the contract, the job or the project.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Is obligated to execute the safety- and environmental policy on board. Can act as the dedicated Safety Officer when the vessel does not have a designated safety officer onboard as assigned by the Master. Always works to comply with (inter)national legislation, flag state requirements, accepted industry standards, company decrees, and contracts. Maintains contact with the Master, other Officers, and Crew. Supports the Master regarding the execution of the policies and procedures. Responsible for the management and maintenance of the safety equipment and firefighting equipment under supervision of Chief Officer as appropriate. Keeps the vessel's administration and nautical books up to date under supervision of Chief Officer as appropriate. Stand watches as OICNW.
Qualifications
EDUCATION: High School Diploma or equivalent [G.E.D.]
EXPERIENCE: 2 years of vessel operations experience in assigned area of responsibility, with at least six months as a Mate of a motor vessel, comparable military service, or maritime academy experience.
REQUIRED CREDENTIALS: • TWIC • Driver's License • MMC with a minimum of a 500 Ton Mate or Master upon NC • 719k Med Cert (STCW) • Deck Officer- Radar Observer (Unlimited)

Competencies: Proactively exercise good judgment & work according to safety rules & regulations. Ability to effectively identify & communicate technical issues & information to others.
OTHER: Typical working rotation is 28 / 28. Paid Travel.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Works outside in conditions of both high and low temperatures. May be exposed to odors, dust, dirt, mechanical hazards, high noise levels and potentially dangerous equipment. Must be able to lift 50 pounds. Physical requirements include standing, squatting, and heavy lifting over long periods during a workday.
