Our Downstream organisation serves around 32 million customers at more than 46,000 retail sites every day. It manages different Chemicals and Products activities as part of an integrated value chain that trades and refines crude oil and other feedstocks into a range of products which are moved and marketed around the world for domestic, industrial and transport use. The products we offer customers include conventional fuels for road, aviation and shipping; low-carbon fuels such as biofuels, renewable natural gas (RNG), hydrogen and electric-vehicle charging. We also produce and sell lubricants, bitumen, sulphur and petrochemicals worldwide.

Shell Global Lubricants has been the global market leader for 15 consecutive years*. Shell produce, market and sell technically advanced lubricants to serve drivers, industries and OEMs. We have 5 lubricant blending plants and 1 grease plant in China, which are an essential part to meet Chinese customer demands. We have a world-leading innovation programme which includes a global technology center in Shanghai. With advanced technology and commitment to meet the increasing demand of Asian customers, we continuously develop and make breakthroughs in products and technologies of passenger car lubricants, heavy engine oils, transmission fluids, special lubricants and greases. Shell has many partners around the world. For example, for more than 60 years, shell has been working with F1 Ferrari to develop high-performance fuels and lubricants. With these legendary technical cooperation, Shell has brought high-quality fuel and lubricants to Chinese users to help keep car engines clean and improve fuel efficiency.

Downstream Legal is a global organization that provides cutting-edge legal solutions to support Shell's Downstream businesses across the globe.

What is the role?

We are looking for an outstanding individual to join the North-East Asia team to support mainly Shell's downstream activities in mainland China as we embark on the energy transition and power progress with our customers. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing timely, fit-for-purpose and practical legal advice that balances compliance, risk mitigation and value mainly to Shell's Global Lubricants business in Mainland China primarily.

Main Accountabilities
  • The Legal Counsel - DS (Downstream) China will be responsible for providing timely, fit-for-purpose and practical legal advice, input on negotiation strategy, drafting expertise and other legal support to all aspects of Shell's Global Lubricants' activities in Mainland China primarily, although the Legal Counsel - DS China may also be required to support other businesses in or outside Mainland China from time to time.
  • The Legal Counsel - DS China will proactively identify legal issues and risks to the business(es) supported and propose solutions and options (in consultation with more senior legal counsels) to help the business achieve its objectives while complying with all applicable laws, Shell General Business Principles and Shell Control Framework.
  • The Legal Counsel - DS China will help ensure that all applicable legal and Shell policy considerations are taken into account in the business' operations, planning activities, contracting, new business/project development, including relations with relevant third parties.
  • The Legal Counsel - DS China will also help provide training on ethics & compliance and other relevant legal/contracting topics to equip other colleagues with the necessary knowledge to comply with Shell's ethics and compliance requirements and reduce legal risks to the business.
  • From time to time, the Legal Counsel - DS China will also be required to manage disputes and claims for and against Shell, including instructing and managing external counsel, all in accordance with Shell Global Litigation's policies and processes.


What we need from you?
  • You have a Chinese law degree and professional legal qualifications.
  • You have 7 - 10 years' work experience as a lawyer in a law firm and/or as an inhouse counsel (preferably both).
  • You possess excellent verbal and written communication skills in English and Chinese.
  • You have good legal knowledge and have demonstrated abilities to exercise sound legal and business judgment independently.
  • You possess excellent interpersonal skills and have demonstrated abilities to influence without authority.
  • You are able to work independently and as part of a team who is able to build relationships and work effectively with others whether on a face-to-face or online/virtual basis.
  • You are curious, willing to learn and keen to take on new challenges.
  • You are prepared to take on some travel within Mainland China from time to time.
