The Catalysis and Analytical Technology group provides a central capability within Shell for Catalysis and Materials. In addition to supporting Shell through development and commercialization of catalysts for refineries, chemical plants, and environmental applications, the team also leverages key skills like materials synthesis, scale-up, and commercialization to enable Shell's Energy Transition ambitions. The Refining Catalyst Team is responsible for supporting Shell's refining catalyst businesses and, increasingly, Energy Transition programs. The team is accountable for invention and development of new catalysts and materials, quality assurance and technical support of catalyst manufacturing, laboratory- and pilot-scale performance testing of catalyst and materials, development of performance models for catalysts and materials, building of data analytic tools, and provision of technical support to our customers.
We are looking for an exceptional leader to join the Refining Catalysts Team. This leader will be responsible for managing eight materials-synthesis staff within the team. This team handles catalyst & materials synthesis activities for the catalyst businesses, along with materials and catalyst synthesis activities in support of Shell's Energy Transition programs.
What's the role -
Responsibilities and activities of the position include
- Delivering Goal Zero: Safety of all staff involved in operation of experimental units and facilities is the absolute top priority of the Team Lead. Expected to establish and maintain a Generative Safety Culture including facilitation of Human Performance through fostering Learner Mindset and Psychological Safety throughout the team. The Team Lead must fully understand and be able to guide the team in implementation of safe work processes such as management of change, permit to work, LOTO, incident reporting & investigation, etc. Will be accountable for compliance with relevant site policies, Shell HSSE Control Framework expectations, and governmental regulatory requirements.
- Operational Excellence: Efficient operation, delivery of high-quality experimental results, and implementation of continuous improvement opportunities across the span of operations in cooperation with the Lead Operators and Scientists/Engineers leading specific projects. Coordinates equipment maintenance and ensures procedures are updated. Coordinates contractor support.
- Staff Development: Directly responsible for supporting all team members in maintaining and developing required skills through annual goal setting and appraisals and Individual Development Plans. The Team Lead will play a primary role in helping team members realize rewarding and inspiring careers, while working in a highly collaborative manner within the team and with colleagues at Shell's other R&D hubs.
- STCH Collaboration: It is essential that the team leader stay abreast of site work processes, HSSE requirements, and maintain a strong network with subject matter experts in multiple disciplines necessary for safe execution of experimental operations.
What we need from you -
- Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.
- Bachelor's Degree is preferred with at least five (5) years' experience in catalyst and/or materials preparation and strong knowledge of catalyst/materials analytical techniques.
- Previous management experience is preferred.

- Strong personal drive to contribute to Energy Transition areas by leveraging catalysis/materials experience and learning new skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively with other departments and those outside the technology; ability to develop extensive "first-person" communication networks, both inside and outside of Shell.
