GENERAL PURPOSE: (A brief statement indicating the reason for the existence of this position) The production technician oversees the manufacturing process that is used within his or her area of responsibility. Production technicians help ensure that production and quality targets are met in a safe and efficient manner.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES: (Five to seven essential tasks or functions that are necessary for successful performance in this role)
- Operate furnaces, boilers, mixers, pelletizers, pumps, blowers, and other process equipment.
- Operate the distributed control system (DCS) console board during times when the full-time board operator is absent or called away.
- Monitor and perform field checks of process equipment and systems to ensure proper operation.
- Perform routine operational tasks, such as taking and recording readings, collecting samples, and conducting inspections.
- Respond to unplanned events that impact plant operations and production.
- Complete production reports, documents, and logs as required, including documenting environmental releases, complete accident reports, update and maintain shift logs and related records.
- Monitor production parameters to ensure finished product will meet internal and customer quality specifications.
- Manage record keeping and maintain documentation that is related to the manufacturing process, enter process data into SAP system, and ensure accuracy of information and data input.
STRATEGIC FOCUS: (The focus desired and expected on the position over the next 1-3 years) Although many of the duties of production technicians are tactical in nature, the position plays an important role in several strategic objectives. Production technicians have a great deal of influence on the amount and physical properties of finished products. Their activities impact cost, safety, and quality. Orion cannot become a supplier of choice within our industry if we cannot produce quality products that meet customer specifications at an economical price.

QUALIFICATIONS: - A high school diploma or GED is a required qualification.
- An associate degree in process technology is a strong plus.
- At least three years of experience working in operations in a chemical plant or refinery are preferred qualificaitons.
- The ability to become proficient in the operation of distributive control systems is essential.
- Good mechanical aptitude and familiarity with machinery and equipment used in chemical manufacturing is a strong plus for this position.
- Good organizational, troubleshooting, and interpersonal skills are required.
- Willingness to work rotating 12-hour shifts that include nights, weekends, and holidays.

Decisions that concern matters that fall outside standard operating procedures are made by the production engineer or production manager.
Degree of authority delegated to this position is: Decision making authority is limited in scope and focuses primarily on following standard operating procedures and solving routine problems that impact the production process.
