Overview / Responsibilities

Principal Technical Safety Engineer

Wood Process and Energy (P&E) is recruiting a Principal Technical Safety (Process Safety) Engineer to join our team on a full-time permanent basis, based in our Glasgow office where we recognise the value of remote and hybrid working.

The role is a staff position suitable for an established process safety practitioner with significant technical safety experience and the ability to lead and manage people. Applications from those who have experience in design office projects covering concept, FEED, Detailed Design and EPC will be considered.

The Operations business provides services to brownfield and greenfield projects across multiple sectors including Oil & Gas, refining, petrochemicals, bulk and fine chemicals and pharma. Wood Glasgow also provides support in specialist areas such as Hydrogen, CCS and new technology. Our Technical Safety team also provide specialist support to other parts of the business including consultancy services and provision of independent safety review co-ordinators and facilitators.

You will join the technical safety team which provides services to projects across multiple sectors covering the whole life cycle, typically from concept to EPC, and operational support. You will collaborate with engineers and designers from all disciplines to ensure effective safety and environmental practices are adopted and risk management processes observed.

Day-to-day responsibilities:
  • Act as the discipline focal point for the Glasgow based operations to lead and deliver Technical Safety project activities within quality, budget and schedule constraints
  • Manage the team of Tech HSE engineers executing work scopes for the Glasgow office, including checking and approval of design deliverables
  • Support to projects on regulatory requirements including COMAH, DSEAR, PSR, PUWER and the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order
  • Lead formal process safety studies such as HAZID, HAZOP, SIL target setting etc. and other safety workshops when required; these studies may be done in person or remotely to suit client preference
  • Provide sound technical advice and solutions to a diversity of technical problems within the discipline, including environmental engineering matters
  • Co-ordinate with other disciplines during all stages of design development, construction, pre-commissioning, and start-up
  • Deputise for the discipline manager as required
  • Provide technical support to projects and site as required
  • Produce Design Safety Engineering deliverables, including but not limited to philosophies, design HSE plans, safety reports, specifications, equipment specifications
  • Carryout active and passive fire protection assessments including, but not limited to, fire risk assessments, fire protection philosophies, fire water demand calculations, fire water adequacy checks and hydraulic calculations using PIPENET spray/sprinkler module.
  • Provide services including QRA, EERA, dispersion modelling, thermal radiation and blast modelling.
  • Attend client meetings and communicate issues with other engineers as required
  • Interact with team members in a positive and professional manner at all times
  • Adhere to, and comply with, relevant discipline specific procedures and provide feedback for continuous improvement
  • Participate in audits and incident investigations as required
  • Ensure self-awareness of relevant regulatory framework, legislation changes, initiatives and industry technology developments
  • Application of the fundamentals of process safety and environmental engineering methodologies, software systems, and design practices as they relate to all phases of the project life cycle
  • Generate discipline estimates and schedules

Skills / Qualifications

Essential:
  • Degree in Chemical Engineering or a related subject
  • Chartered Engineer
  • Relevant project experience; refining and petrochemical experience would be an advantage
  • Considerable experience of leading and facilitating hazard studies (HAZID, HAZOP & LOPA)
  • Considerable experience of Fire and Explosion protection engineering, including consequence analysis and fire risk assessment
  • Considerable experience of gas (toxic & flammable) dispersion consequence analysis and fire and gas detection methodologies
  • Effective communication skills
  • Competent user of standard Microsoft Office package, particularly MS Word and Excel
  • Applicants should be able to obtain a UK security clearance


Desirable:
  • COMAH Safety Report, including engagement with the Competent Authority
  • DSEAR compliance demonstration
  • Experienced user of industry standard software packages such as PIPENET, DNV PHAST, exSILentia, PHA Pro, HAZOP Manager
  • Certified Functional Safety Engineer
  • Certified Hazard Study leader
  • Environmental Protection Engineering experience
  • Human Factors awareness
  • Awareness of process operations and/or brownfield modifications
