Wood is currently seeking a Senior Substation Engineerto expand our team within the Oil & Gas Canada business in Calgary, AB.

Key Responsibilities:

  • To carry out duties and responsibilities as assigned by the lead electrical engineer
  • Execute engineering activities (Concept, Front End Engineering Development, Technical Study & Detailed Design)
  • Act as a discipline focal point as required.
  • Maintain the required technical quality of work.
  • Ensure that designs comply with the relevant Codes, Standards, Regulations and Procedures
  • Develop Sub-Station layout and preliminary design documentation.
  • Review, check and approve work output of discipline assigned personnel as required
  • Prepare High Voltage structure layout and of high-voltage switchyard equipment and control panels specification.
  • Prepare equipment specifications and design of High Voltage disconnect Switch, High Voltage/Medium Voltage Circuit Breaker, High Voltage Power Transformer, Medium Voltage Bus, Communications equipment, SCADA interface specification and design.
  • Preparation of Electrical Physical design packages consisting of One-line, Site Plan, Electrical Plan & Sections, Grounding Plan & Details, Conduit Plan & Details, Control House Plan, Control House Grounding Plan & Details, Lighting Plan, Lightning Protection Plan and Bill of material (BOM)
  • Grounding design per IEEE 80 and latest software tools
  • Lightning Shielding Studies
  • Insulation Coordination study
  • Cost estimates and Material take offs
  • Provide constrcution and commissioning support as required


Skills / Qualifications

  • Electrical Engineering Degree from a recognized university
  • Minimum of 10 years engineering experience, including minimum of 5 years experience with 240KV Utility substations in BC
  • Experience in an electrical utility environment is must.
  • Professional Engineer designation with EGBC and in Alberta
  • Excellent English written and verbal communication skills.
  • Understanding of the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) as well as BC Hydro system (and applicable utility in BC).
  • 240kV Switch station experience is must.
