The Subsurface Lifecycle Applications Management (SLAM) portfolio includes various advanced and differentiating subsurface applications, several of which are key workhorse applications for Geology, Petrophysics, Geomechanics and Reservoir Engineering.

As Shell has been progressing with Open Subsurface Data Universe (OSDU) journey on data (system of records), the SLAM organization in Subsurface Data and Digital (SSDD) start also working on the subsurface applications migration to the OSDU and Cloud (system of insights). This new role will be vital to leverage and bring these emerging technologies into businesses in the following 4 years by working closely with several interfaces/stakeholders/businesses such as SLAM, IT Operations and Competence Center, OSDU, Technical Data Management and Workflow, Portfolio Management, discipline leadership, Shell Operated and non-operated Ventures

What's the role?

The role has to provide subsurface domain expertise and understanding of the upstream value chain, workflow, data management and IT processes. It is a genuinely hybrid subsurface and IT generalist position, providing growth opportunities and extensive stakeholder and interface management.

The Subsurface Applications Advisor provides subsurface expertise and coordinates between several interfaces involved in the OSDU migration. In addition, s/he actively contributes to the proof of concepts and various projects aiming at portfolio rationalization involving OSDU migration. S/he will work closely with SMT, IDT-SOM and Competence Center, OSDU, Technical Data Management and Workflow, Portfolio Management, discipline leadership, SOVs, JV/NOVs. S/he will report to the Development Manager SLAM, who is responsible for the higher-level vision and strategy of the products/migration journey.

Your accountabilities are:
  • Actively contribute to gap analysis, workflow mapping and project planning to sustain a healthy subsurface applications portfolio
  • Co-create OSDU migration plans; drive their execution
  • Contribute/Advise to the subsurface apps portfolio strategy (Geology, Petrophysics, Geomechanics, Reservoir Engineering)
  • Proactively gather business requirements and translate them into well-written proposals with clear acceptance criteria to enable effective delivery through regular refinement and prioritization.
  • Resolve any unclarities with the program manager and business stakeholders.
  • Assess solutions. Invite stakeholders into the review session to ask for feedback and steer. Ensure the product delivered is of sufficient quality to deploy.
  • Ensure products are documented from IT (Information Technology) and user perspectives.
  • Actively co-lead and contribute to programs aiming at user behaviour changes, thus, contributing to cost rationalization programs globally.
  • Work closely with the workflow consultants to ensure a seamless deployment of the product into the business.
  • Collaborate with TAP (Technical Advisory Panel) members, PTEs/SMEs (Subject Matter Expert), R&D (Research & Development) teams, IT support bodies, Portfolio Management and business users on strategy and innovation, contributing ideas
  • Build and maintain effective relations with 3rd party providers of the software platforms.
  • Provide training and consultancy to business users.
  • Work in close collaboration with PetroSigns teams to find synergies
  • Onboard emerging digital products in the subsurface apps portfolio, including forecasting the consequences on workflows and license management.
  • Build solutions that are useful to the end-users, integrated across subsurface workflows, and scalable within the existing software landscape (OSDU, workhorse apps: PetroSigns, Techlog, Petrel, Dynamo, etc.).
  • Provide adequate maintenance and support organization for the developed products, working closely with 1st line support and 3rd line support (dev teams) while acting as 2nd line support.
  • Ensure that proven fiber optic tools and workflows are adequately documented and communicated to portfolio managers, global process owner representatives and further stakeholders.
  • Understand and promote clear business cases for the use of cloud/OSDU technologies and increase, through appropriate engagement, the appetite for selected technologies to be developed or enhanced and, if proven valuable to Shell, to be prototyped, piloted and deployed.
  • Develop and maintain effective personal networks with teams of OSDU and businesses.
  • Keep abreast of new developments/technologies.
  • Identify and integrate opportunities to improve workflows and tools using digitalization concepts.
