Job Summary:
The Port Captain oversees the vessels at the port to ensure they are prepared for all voyages. The Port Captain responsibilities include making sure that Hydra is in compliance with all maritime safety protocols, ensure all crews are sufficient in size and qualifications, maintain that the proper equipment is on board, and that the captain is doing their job appropriately. In addition, the Port Captain's position is to oversee the smooth operation of Hydra's port and to ensure that the vessels are in compliance with all safety and functionality requirements.

Port Captain Responsibilities:
  • Select, supervise, evaluate, and train vessel managers and their subordinates.
  • Serve as the primary liaison between vessel management and onshore personnel.
  • Responsible for maintaining good working relationships with all vessel employees and crew, alike.
  • Assure vessels are in compliance with Hydra's policies and all governmental regulatory agencies. Monitor river conditions and make available information necessary to support navigational decisions.
  • Respond to vessel emergencies in effort to minimize vessel down time while providing onsite supervision and direction.
  • Make on board vessel inspections to ensure safe and efficient vessel operations are maintained, (as needed).
  • Administer all of Hydra company policies including disciplinary actions.
  • Discipline employees up to and including discharge after consulting with the HR Manager.
  • Represent and articulate Hydra position in response to the U.S. Coast Guard or any regulatory agency initiatives and or proposals impacting navigation or vessel operations.
  • Ensure good public relations are maintained with local, state, and federal agencies.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures to enhance safety and efficiency in every operation.
  • Interface with other Hydra personnel including sales and logistics, repair, finance, purchasing, crew, human resources, and the claims department.
  • Conduct performance evaluations at the direction of the HR Manager.
  • Comply with the Safety Management System in support of continual improvement and management objectives.
  • Maintain budget for work scope.
Education/Skills:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience as a Port Captain.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Candidate should have excellent organizational skills and a proven ability to prioritize work and effectively manage their time.
  • Candidate should have strong leadership and commitment skills to ensure a healthy and safe workplace in efforts to prevent a negative impact on the environment.
  • Candidate should display excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with Offshore Crews and Onshore Management, alike.

Technical Requirements:
  • Must be proficient and able to effectively work with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Must be able to work on Mac computers. Training is available upon request.
  • Must understand document control and file sharing procedures, Dropbox, and other online tools.
Physical Requirements:
  • Must actively participate in a USCG DOT Drug and Alcohol program having no failed or refused test.
  • Must possess and maintain the physical ability to safely perform the duties of the Port Captain position, this includes the ability to move about all areas of vessel, climbing in and out of tanks and holes and squeezing into tight spaces to perform inspections and climbing/working aloft.
  • Should be capable of working in extreme environments for extended periods of time.
  • Should be capable of moving up and down steep steps multiple times a day in a safe manner.

Office Hours & Travel Requirements
  • Must be able to maintain office hours from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm (Primarily in Houston and Port Arthur, TX).
