Overview / Responsibilities

Wood is currently seeking a Senior Structural Engineer to join our Mining & Minerals team in Oakville, Ontario who will apply extensive and comprehensive knowledge of structural engineering principles and practices to the organization's products and services. The Engineer will plan, schedule and assign/supervise or conduct broad and/or technically complex engineering assignments requiring judgment, independent evaluation, selection and significant adaptation and deviation from standard techniques and procedures.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide structural design and technical support including calculations, design and design drawing reviews
  • Prepare and manage design specications, RFQ for structural packages and issue recommendations for awards.
  • Manage structural packages awarded to fabricators
  • Write detailed design documents and specifications for industrial operating facilities
  • Review project documents prior to issue for scope and presentation, including checking for technical accuracy.
  • Developing structural/architectural drawings from conceptual to detailed design, and project construction drawings
  • Developing 3D structural/architectural models using Microstation V8, 3D AutoCAD and E3D
  • Coordinating work with other related discipline engineers and designers
  • Working closely with supervisor and checkers from start to completion of tasks/projects and in a team environment with other disciplines
  • Operating within the company's Quality system and Safety Policy in all phases of assignments
  • Analyze designs for efficiency of construction, use of materials, functionality and practicality of design.
  • Develop or alter standard project specifications to meet project specific design criteria.
  • Establish project standards and assist in the development of the project design criteria.
  • Monitor and guide design/drafting tasks and oversee the internal checking required on all project drawings.
  • Responsible to seal all drawings that have been prepared under their direction as required in jurisdiction where professional designation is recognized.
  • Review and approve fabricator shop drawings.
  • Collaborate with all other disciplines to interface large mechanical equipment packages and systems with civil works, structural steel, power supply, instrumentation and controls, and mechanical services.
  • Interfacing with Piping Designers, Plant Layout Designers, Process, Civil, Structural, Electrical and Instrumentation Engineers is also critical for the success of a project.
  • Give effective presentations to customers, suppliers and internally within the organization
  • Assure the technical quality of work performed by subordinates based upon organizational standards, codes and general knowledge of engineering principles and projects
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by management
  • Organize, plans, and coordinate own work as well as the resources assigned on a specific project


Skills / Qualifications

  • Undergraduate or Graduate degree in Structural Engineering with P. Eng Designation or eligible
  • Plus 10 years of structural design and engineering experience, minimum 3 years in mining and heavy industrial projects.
  • Hands-on steel and concrete design experience in Mining Industry and Heavy industrial, understanding of Canadian building codes.
  • Knowledge of STAAD Pro structural analysis and Prostructure 3D modeling software, MicroStation V8 and Autocad.
  • Knowledge of fabrication is an asset
  • Ability to work efficiently and demonstrate effective organizational skills
  • Authorization to work lawfully in Canada without sponsorship from Wood is required
  • Experience with Mathcad or Excel, Navis Works, AutoCAD, MS Office

  • Candidate must live within reasonable commuting distance from Oakville, ON office or be willing to relocate and live in Oakville area at own expense
