Overview / Responsibilities

Wood is currently recruiting for a Material Handling Engineer with specific knowledge required for producing safe, technically accurate, and cost effective Solids Material Handling systems, equipment designs, and deliverables for Offshore and Onshore oil & gas production facilities, refineries, and chemical and industrial manufacturing facilities.

Local candidates to Houston, TX only please.

Authorization to work permanently in the U.S. without sponsorship required.

Individual responsibility will be commensurate with capability and experience level.

Working within a project team environment is expected.

Typically reports to the Mechanical Engineering Project Lead.

Reports administratively to the Mechanical Engineering Department Manager.

Skills / Qualifications

Job Requirements / Skills:
  • Have an understanding of the project scope of work, budget and schedule, particularly as it applies to the Mechanical discipline.
  • Become familiar with project and department procedures.
  • Prepare Material Handling Philosophy/Strategy, Material Handling Study, and Equipment /Material Handling Plan including maintainability and access studies.
  • Perform material handling equipment sizing calculations.
  • Work with HSE to perform Human Factors reviews as required.
  • Coordinate with all technical disciplines, HSE and Regulatory Lead along with equipment suppliers in the sizing, rating and selection of equipment.
  • Prepare material handling data sheets, inquiry requisitions, technical bid evaluations, purchase requisitions and change orders for material handling equipment.
  • Review specialized mechanical design with in-house specialists and suppliers as necessary (e.g., special rotating equipment, heat transfer equipment, architectural, etc.).
  • Work with design groups to ensure 3D model accurately depicts material handling equipment.
  • Review and markup vendor data for compliance to the purchase requisition and project requirements; recommend solutions that promote safety and consistency with Equipment List.
  • Communicate effectively with project team, vendor and client; inform Project Lead of significant issues and changes impacting manhours, cost or schedule.
  • Manage and coordinate technical issues for equipment purchase orders through equipment FAT and delivery.
  • Understand and monitor package milestone dates related to material purchase, issuance of documents, fabrication, inspection / testing and delivery; help expedite vendors to meet purchase order requirements / project schedule.
  • Coordinate with package inspector(s) as appropriate to review inspection reports, attend pre-inspection meetings, prepare vendor site visit reports, attend witnessed tests, attend final inspection, and help resolve quality issues.
  • Prepare estimates for equipment costs and weights, and for Engineering and Design labor man-hours.
  • Perform thorough review of equipment supplier documentation, and ensure effective interface. Coordinate multi-discipline review. Incorporate supplier information into project design and documents.
  • Prepare subcontract scopes of work and bid packages.
  • Review and markup vendor data for compliance to purchase requisition and project requirements, ensuring consistency with primary project documents.
  • Assist in preparation of conceptual studies, designs, reports, and proposals.
  • Participate in model reviews.
  • Review and check work of other engineers.
  • Assist in training and mentoring of less experienced engineers.
  • Occasional field visits, climbing stairs, ladders and lifting up to 25 lbs.

Qualifications / Experience:
  • 10+ years of Material Handling experience in a related industry
  • Proficiency with MS Office products
  • Working knowledge of regionally applicable material handling codes and standards (ABS/USCG, ANSI, API, ASME, ASTM, BSEE, CEMA, HI, HMI, NFPA)
  • Minimum BS in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related degree
  • Preferred: Licensed Professional Engineer
