Overview

Wood's Sacramento office has full-time career opportunity for a Senior Environmental Planner to primarily support our highly regarded Hazard Mitigation and Emergency Management (HM & EM) program. Key functions of this position will be supporting climate resiliency and environmental planning services for state and local governments and other clients. We are seeking a candidate to support our project managers with a broad understanding of long-range planning, climate change science, outreach and engagement tools. We are looking for someone that is passionate about helping improve resiliency in communities throughout the Western US. While this position supports hybrid office and home schedule, the ideal candidate will reside in the Northern California area. The candidate must be able to travel to facilitate in-person work sessions and planning workshops.



Key Responsibilities
  • Working in a team environment, support the development and update of Hazard Mitigation Plans (HMPs) that meet Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 (DMA 2000) standards
  • Perform research and risk assessment analyses on hazard and climate-related data and write significant portions of vulnerability assessments and planning documents
  • Assist with other emergency management plans in preparedness, response and recovery
  • Ability to effectively review and translate technical reports and analyses into widely accessible reports, plans, policies, graphics, and maps
  • Ability to mentor and train junior staff
  • Support authentic engagement with diverse stakeholder groups and communities by leading and supporting outreach efforts using virtual tools like Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Slido and attending in-person workshops and meeting events
  • Manage multiple projects, being responsible for ensuring that deliverables, schedules, and budgets are achieved
  • Market and develop new work to support the continued growth of our HM & EM team and the office's environmental services
  • Support or lead proposal preparation work and technical work scope development
  • Requires ability to travel to attend and facilitate client meetings and community workshops. Work travel may also involve field visits at remote job sites. Overtime and overnight stays may be required


Skills / Qualifications

Role Requirements
  • BS in Natural Resources, Planning, GIS, Emergency Management, Civil/Environmental Engineering, Geography, Environmental Science or related field. MS preferred
  • 8+ years experience, or any equivalent education and experience
  • Experience working in California and western United States and a strong understanding of California land use and environmental regulatory frameworks and permit conditions
  • Minimum 3 years of Project Management experience
  • Ability to contribute and lead business development and proposal preparation
  • Minimum 2-3 years experience interfacing with local governments and municipalities
  • Strong work ethic, self-motivated, and capable of independent work, but demonstrated ability to work on project teams
  • Strong writing and document skills a must, particularly related to organizing and formatting planning documents
  • Must possess good organizational and communication skills
  • Excellent analytical / problem-solving skills
  • Attention to detail and experience with quality assurance/quality control and data analysis
  • Must pass drug test, background check, have a valid driver's license, and must have a satisfactory driving record in accordance with the Company's driving (MVR) policy


Preferred Qualifications
  • American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP)
  • Experience developing or reviewing Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 and Hazard Mitigation Plans is preferred
  • Knowledge of HAZUS, FEMA Benefit Cost software, and National Flood Insurance Program is a plus
  • Familiarity with FEMA RiskMAP program is also a plus
  • Familiarity or experience with ESRI's ArcGIS software
  • Experience with one or more of the following is a plus: land use planning, climate resiliency planning, natural resource management plans, drought response plans, energy assurance plans, and Community Wildfire Protection Plans
