Overview / Responsibilities

Wood is currently recruiting for a Quantity Surveyor to provide consultancy services on a range infrastructure projects. You will be working as part of a multi-disciplinary team delivering projects from feasibility, through design and into construction. Projects will be across a range of sectors, including but not limited to: water infrastructure, waste infrastructure, industrial facilities and public buildings (education, defence, government facilities).

We are looking for individuals that have a strong base of technical skills coupled with excellent organisational and communication skills gained in either a multi-disciplinary consultancy environment who now want to enhance and diversify these skills within a growing organisation that will support their future development.

Key Responsibilities

Management responsibilities
  • Managing the interface with the client to ensure service provide meets requirements and achieves high levels of client satisfaction
  • Financial management of services to deliver contract requirements to a commercially positive result
  • Supporting the growth of the business through visible representation of the business with existing and prospective clients, at industry forums and via social media
  • Business development and the supporting the winning of work with clients through business development and bidding

Technical responsibilities

Delivering own work to ensure excellence in the technical delivery of services including:
  • Development of project cost estimates including the collation of data to support estimate preparation, parametric, comparative, bottom-up and use of appropriate indices
  • Development of cash-flow analysis for estimates in liaison with project schedulers
  • Development of three-point estimate data to support monte-carlo simulation and risk management
  • Assessment of appropriate forms of contract and contracting strategies to deliver the project scope in line with the clients requirements and risk appetite
  • Preparation of contract documents including engaging with the project team and key stakeholders to compile the works information
  • Engagement with contractors during procurement and contract execution to assure effective management of risks and issues for the contract scope
  • Leading the procurement of construction contractors including: supplier briefings; preparing ITT documents, responding to bidder's questions, tender evaluation and contract award
  • Administration of contracts including: certification of payment, evaluation of variations / compensation events and, assessing delivery progress, final accounts, resolution of contract issues during defects phases

Skills / Qualifications

Skills / Experience

  • Experience of cost estimation methods and standard methods of measurement including CESMM and NRM
  • Track record in the management of major procurements of construction contracts including preparation of tender documents (including contract terms and pricing model), control of the tender evaluation and award with associated governance
  • Knowledge of a wide range of forms of contract including NEC, JCT and FIDIC
  • Experience of the administration of contracts for major capital projects including the valuation of payments to suppliers, assessing compensation events and claims and negotiation of final accounts
  • Confident communicator and influencer of stakeholders
  • Ability to identify, address and resolve differences between individuals and/or interest groups

  • Experience of preparing procurement strategies for major capital projects including procurement of consultancy services and construction contractors
  • Proven experience of motivating people involved in the project, understanding strengths and weaknesses to achieve a high performing team
  • Strong negotiation skills
  • Experience in the contribution to the development of project business cases and the evaluation of options to satisfy project requirements
  • Experience in the implementation and management of software and systems related to estimating, cost management and contract management
  • Knowledge of value management and value engineering techniques
  • Knowledge of capitalisation of project costs
  • Experience in the development of whole-life cost estimates and optimisation between capital and operational costs
  • Strategic thinker and ability to solve complex problems


  • Degree level or equivalent in an engineering, building, quantity surveying, science or business subject
  • Associate Membership of relevant professional institution, e.g. MRICS

  • Commercial related qualification - contracts, adjudication, purchasing
  • Project Management qualification, for example PRINCE2, APM PMQ (APMP)
