The Project Manager manages - with responsibility for results - large projects (> 3 million GBP) and/or simultaneously multiple small projects of comparable total volume / risk with the objective of:
  • executing the project to meet the required standard of quality (time, cost, quality)
  • ensuring business success and customer satisfaction.
The Project Manager has overall responsibility for the financial outcome of the project, and will have direct responsibility for the project team (not functional responsibility) for the duration of the project.

The Project Manager will have regular contact with people from all functional areas of the Business, including Sales, Legal and Contracts, Commercial Project Management, Engineering, Procurement, HR, and Operations. External contacts include customers, sub contractors, suppliers, consortium partners and other Business Units.

Customer Management
  • Actively gathers information on the customer and the customer's requirements/targets.
  • Involves the customer in decision-making processes and provides regular information on project progress.
  • Identifies cross-Group business opportunities.
  • Creates additional business opportunities out of the ongoing project.
Proposal (Large) /Contract Management
  • Is actively involved in the bid phase, analyzing customer requirements and examining their technical feasibility and transferability into a bid.
  • Ensures that all planning elements (e.g. system structure, work breakdown structure, ... ) are included in the bid phase.
  • Influences formulation of the necessary contracts.
  • Ensures that the results of risk assessment are taken into account in contracts and in costing
Risk & Opportunity Management
  • Throughout project life cycle, identifies and assesses all risk factors utilizing available checklists (risk analysis).
  • Devises suitable strategies for risk mitigation (elimination,/reduction).
  • Identifies and minimizes non-conformance costs.
  • Throughout project life cycle identifies, assesses, and implements all opportunities for improving results.
  • Negotiates with stakeholders on Change Requests and incorporates them into contracts.
Claim Management
  • Involves the project team in the identification of claims.
  • Assesses contracts in terms of claim-relevant significance, ensures examination by legal experts.
  • Informs customer, management and project team of scope deviations.
  • Identifies and mitigates external claims.
  • Conducts (with Commercial and Legal teams) negotiations on making/mitigating claims.
Partner Management
  • Involves qualified subcontractors/partners in a timely manner.
  • Selects subcontractors/partners according to defined criteria and based on strategic viewpoints.
  • Rigorously monitors the performance of the subcontractors/partners and conducts timely escalation (in the event of qualitative shortfalls and problems in cooperation).
  • Identifies further opportunities for business with the partner(s).
Finance Management
  • Optimizes project profitability and has Profit & Loss responsibility for the project as defined in the approved Project Agreement.
  • Performs regular cost controls.
  • Initiates invoicing according to project progress.
  • Develops and implements controlling measures.
Project Planning & Controlling Completion
  • Handles all relevant planning elements and milestone attainments according to the project categorization.
  • Ensures compliance with procedures and requirements concerning quality management (audits, tests, acceptance checks) according to the system.
  • Ongoing monitoring of project status, including early identification of discrepancies and initiation of targeted measures/action.
  • Holds regular project status meetings and organizes acceptance of milestone attainment.
  • Manages acceptance of delivered scope and services, including quality controls.
  • Organizes customer acceptance tests and final project handover to contract partner(s).
Leadership & Communication
  • Ensures targeted and full communication within the project team and with stakeholders.
  • Agrees targets with project staff, deploys staff in a focused manner and delegates defined responsibilities and authority.
  • Coaches and controls the team/individual members of staff.
  • Seeks active feedback (e.g. from members of staff, managers, customers) on project performance.
  • Motivates the project team.
Knowledge Management
  • Seeks and actively utilizes sources of information, knowledge and experience, with a view to applying them project-specifically and entrepreneurially.
  • Analyzes information, knowledge and experience, and maintains accessible project records.
  • Conducts a project closure meeting and a Lessons Learned Workshop.
  • Seizes opportunities to learn from others and to exchange experience.
  • Coaches new project managers according to requirements, as specified by their line manager.


Knowledge & Skills:

Professional Knowledge;
  • Detailed knowledge and application of Project Management tools / techniques e.g. Stakeholder analysis, Earned Value, Scheduling etc.
  • Ideally sector/customer-relevant knowledge: Knows the market and the competitors of the customer, as well as the customer's strategies, business processes and decision-makers.
  • Intercultural communication.
  • Knowledge of economics in project business: Established procedures for monitoring and control of financial aspects of project (e.g. project costing and reviewing); economic indicators (Scorecards).
  • Consortium agreements, operator models, leasing; international contract law.
  • Leadership team development, motivation
  • Health & Safety: Understanding the Health and Safety implications of work being carried out and the group specific industry regulations and health and safety working practices.
  • Member or working towards membership of the APM or an equivalent professional body.
  • Knowledge acquired in > 5 years in Project Manager role ideally in the heavy industry sector e.g. Iron and Steel.
  • Project management of multi-cultural project teams in worldwide locations would be an advantage.
  • Proven track record in delivering projects to time, cost and quality.
