Overview / Responsibilities:

Wood's Resilient Environment Business Group is seeking a Water Resources Engineer to help manage our growing storm water consulting projects in San Diego, CA.

Bachelors or master's degree in engineering (civil, environmental, or closely related) is required, with 2 - 5 years of experience in civil engineering or a directly related field. California licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) is preferred, however actively working towards license obtainment is a requirement for the position.

Our office provides services to our clients related to all things stormwater, including stormwater engineering and environmental compliance consultation. This means you will have the opportunity to grow in your interested field whether it be performing field investigations, consulting clients in stormwater compliance pathways, or designing cutting edge stormwater treatment measures to better our environment. Many of our projects offer end-to-end involvement by staff allowing the project team to conceptualize, design, monitor, report, and recommend future improvements to many of our projects. This gives staff the unique opportunity to get a comprehensive look into real-world operations and break away from the monotony instead of getting stuck behind your desk.

The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic about, and be able to assist with, current stormwater engineering and monitoring work including:
  • Hydrology & Hydraulics,
  • Stormwater treatment and implementation strategy,
  • Stormwater quality monitoring,
  • Stormwater system and BMP design, and
  • Implementation of the current stormwater permits (Industrial General Permit, Construction General Permit, and Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System)

Key Responsibilities:

All these responsibilities are conducted under the direction, guidance, and oversight of a senior engineer:
  • Complete engineering calculations for inclusion in hydrologic, hydraulic, and stormwater reports
  • Development and/or oversight of hydrologic and hydraulic models, with senior direction
  • Design of stormwater BMPs per the CGP, MS4, IGP, and Trash Provision requirements
  • Draft preparation of technical studies (hydrology and hydraulic reports, stormwater quality management plans), including the associated exhibits
  • Learn the general MS4 and IGP permit requirements and review prepared stormwater quality management plans against those requirements
  • Assist in the updating of client stormwater design manuals
  • Assist in the preparation of BMP design and implementation feasibility studies and alternative analysis
  • Be available for wet-weather monitoring activities between October 1 and April 30
  • Prepare construction drawings with senior guidance and assist in the preparation of specifications and engineering cost estimates
  • Complete technical tasks with senior guidance and understand what technical skills/programs are needed for those tasks
  • Research new technical tasks and requirements on your own with guidance from a senior engineer
  • Track project emails, client requests, and work with a senior engineer to follow-up on these emails and requests
  • Provide direction junior staff on tasks that you have mastered
  • Network within the group to find new tasks that you feel comfortable taking on
  • Be open to tackling new challenges every day

Skills / Qualifications

  • B.S. in Engineering (Civil, Environmental, or closely related discipline)
  • 2 - 5 years of relevant experience in civil engineering or a closely related area
  • CA Professional Engineering license, or proof of progress towards obtaining the license
  • Proficient in AutoCAD Civil 3D
  • Experience in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Direct experience with drainage basin delineations, hydrology and hydraulic calculations/design, and stormwater BMP report preparation and design (SUSMPs, WQMPs, SWQMPs)
  • Ability to prepare meeting agendas and notes
  • Experience with preparing report outlines and the first draft
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Basic understanding of how to track and meet budgets and schedules
  • General understanding of the importance of QA/QC

  • Previous design experience in Southern CA
  • Knoweldege of Southern CA stormwater regulations and design
  • Previous PS&E experience
  • Strong GIS capabilities
  • Experience with graphics, such as charts and visuals
  • Experience with HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, SWMM and other related modeling programs
