Overview / Responsibilities

Wood is currently recruiting for a UK Pension Scheme Secretary. The Wood Pension team based in Knutsford is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Pension Plan for its members. The team use their expertise to administer and monitor all aspects of the plan. This is an excellent opportunity for a Trustee Secretary to join us within our busy Pensions Department where you will support the Head of Pensions in delivering Trustee Secretary duties for the £3billion + DB/DC pension plans, with a keen focus for best practice and robust governance. You will work with the trustees in development of the trustee business plan and agendas, minuting and managing delivery of agreed actions, and draw on solid experience acting as Pension Scheme Secretary gained in-house or consultancy, with staff management exposure and be seeking a challenging and rewarding in-house opportunity. The role can be full or part time and will be on a hybrid working basis.

Key Responsibilities
  • Work with the trustee board to make sure the Plan is efficiently and properly run, members' benefits are secure and support efficient and effective governance
  • Maintaining governance documentation and standards
  • Working collaboratively with a range of advisers. Managing the relationships across a broad range of advisers
  • Effective challenge of advisers. The Pensions Regulator expects trustees to provide effective challenge to advisers, where appropriate, and to test the advice provided. A professional Scheme Secretary can assist the trustees in providing such challenge
  • Assisting in the management of potential conflicts of interests. A key aspect of governance is the identification and management of potential conflicts of interest
  • Filling knowledge gaps. An experienced and professional scheme secretary can complement the existing skillset and knowledge base of the current trustees
  • Focused and specific advice. It is important to ensure that instructions to advisers are clear and concise so that the resultant advice is focused and specific and addresses the trustee requirements. Failure to do this can result in cost and time inefficiencies
  • Trustee Knowledge and Understanding. A professional scheme secretary can help identify, co-ordinate and manage training and development needs to assist the trustees to comply with their Trustee Knowledge and Understanding obligations
  • Develop the strategy and framework for UK communications programmes and policies in support of healthy participation and understanding levels and ensure implementation once agreed
  • Attendance at Trustee meetings to take minutes and agree follow up action points
  • MND appointments - monitoring term end dates and ensuring nomination and selection process is implemented
  • Completion of tPR's annual returns and ensuring updating of Notifiable Events
  • Manage, control and monitoring the Trustee risk register
  • Preparation and maintenance of the Annual calendar of events
  • Review/Draft the Annual Chair Reports
  • Ensure the timely preparation of the Plans report and accounts
  • Administration strategic and operational planning - Annual events (ben stats/AA/Pen Inc/ Sal limiter/bulk switch/Valuation) plus ad hoc projects (self select closure/bulk TVIN/GMP Rec/data cleansing)

Skills / Qualifications

  • APMI Qualified
  • Educated to Degree level

Knowledge, skills and experience:
  • Clear success operating at a similar level in respect of other sizable schemes
  • A depth of technical understanding in respect of both defined benefit and defined contribution schemes
  • Self-starter, able to work unsupervised and occasionally remotely
  • Previous experience in a similar role is essential
