Overview / Responsibilities

Wood Environment & Infrastructure Solutions is seeking an experienced Senior Structural Engineer to join our group in Vancouver, BC.

We're looking for a well-rounded individual who can meet deadlines, has excellent communication skills, work well under pressure and can deliver high quality results. This person shall be able to efficiently work with key project team members. The individual shall be able provide valuable leadership to junior staff while assisting them in the development of their technical skills.

The primary duties of the Structural Engineer include providing conceptual design at the early stages of the project and developing these into high quality detailed design products. Daily activities will also includes working in multi-disciplines environment, including Architects, Civil, Industrial, Mechanical and Electrical Engineers. The selected individual will require performing complex calculations as well as reviewing calculations, conducting design drawing reviews, and oversee and/or participate in field investigations as necessary.

P roject work for this role will involve engineering and design for reinforced concrete, reinforced masonry and steel structural frames for underground and aboveground structures, slabs, retaining walls, and deep and shallow foundations. You must be able to model and analyze complex structures for applicable seismic loads specifically in BC and in accordance to NBC and British Columbia Building Code.

You will independently develop and coordinate the work of the structural design team throughout the design development/contract document and construction phases of a project. Project types are varied from commercial and industrial to transit and other vertical structures. More specifically, your day-to-day responsibilities will include:
  • Designing underground and above ground structures including industrial and commercial, transit or water and wastewater facilities (structural steel, reinforced concrete, Composite members and pre-cast concrete) - Experience and knowledge of seismic design is a must.
  • Utilizing structural modeling software for analysis, and being able to interpret the output data for the development of structural design
  • Performing deep foundations and shoring design, along with the monitoring of existing structures that are in close proximity of new structures
  • Developing and preparing Construction staging and phasing plans
  • Review, design development and mark-up of construction drawings for foundations, columns , roof framing, floor framings, walls, pits, slabs with required sections and details,
  • Coordinating engineering work schedules
  • Client liaison and relationship management
  • Establishing solid working relationships with team members, engineers, architects, project managers and stakeholders;
  • Prepare specifications, contract documents, and preparing engineering progress reports;
  • Reviewing project documents for technical accuracy and competency;
  • Ensuring design conforms with all applicable codes and client standards;
  • Travel to the construction sites to conduct Structural inspections and prepare report;

Skills / Qualifications

  • Bachelors or Masters Degree in Structural Engineering and Registration as a Professional Engineer in the Province of British Columbia with a good standing.
  • Min 10 years of progressively responsible applicable experience in Structural analysis and design of reinforced concrete and steel structures or directly related activities utilizing the required technical skills.
  • Previous work experience with an engineering consulting firm.
  • Detailed knowledge of BCBC, ABC, OBC and NBC codes as well as CSA S16-01, A23.1-4 and ACI.
  • Working understanding of deep foundations and geotechnical applications such as L-Pile and Group Piles.
  • Detailed knowledge of structural modeling and finite element analysis, dynamic and static analysis, seismic analysis, and sound experience of working with STAAD-Pro, SFrame, SAFE, ETABS software.
  • Detailed knowledge and skill with calculation tools including Excel and MathCAD.
  • Demonstrated excellent written and verbal English communication skills with specific proficiency in effectively communicating complex engineering issues internally and externally as required and/or assigned. The ability and previous experiences in preparation of written technical documents, such as condition assessment reports, predesign reports, design briefing reports, presentations, technical proposals and specifications is essential.
  • Working knowledge of CAD software as BIM, Microstation, AutoCAD
  • Well organized, self directed work habits with a demonstrated ability to prioritize and schedule tasks managing multiple assignments simultaneously.
  • Most importantly, the ability to lead teams and mentor younger staff
