Overview / Responsibilities

Wood is currently seeking a Senior Aquatic Biologist in Ontario . The successful candidate will join our Aquatic Ecosystem Team of biologists working on a broad range of resource development projects.

Please note this role can be based from any Wood location within Ontario.

The successful candidate will work within the aquatic sciences group under the supervision of the group lead. Primary responsibilities will be to provide coordination support on a wide variety of projects and mentoring junior and intermediate biologists within the group.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead in the design and implementation of fish and aquatic studies/field work and provide technical oversight
  • Task management associated with aquatic, fish and fish habitat evaluations for various types of multi-disciplinary projects and developments with a focus on mining
  • Liaising with internal and external clients and regulators
  • Data analysis and preparation of deliverables and submissions to regulatory agencies
  • Assisting with report and proposal preparation


Skills / Qualifications

The position requires that the successful candidate has a solid technical and / or academic background. Key requirements include:
  • Minimum 10 years of relevant post-graduation experience within environmental consulting and/or regulatory agencies (or equivalent experience)
  • Master of Science in fisheries or wildlife biology or a degree or diploma in fisheries/wildlife biology/management
  • Excellent technical writing and communication skills
  • Experience providing technical review of consulting reports
  • Willingness to work flexible hours including field work under a variety of conditions
  • Willingness to travel and work outdoors in remote locations for extended periods of time
  • Experience in working with Provincial and Federal legislation governing fish habitat, fish, surface water, and environmental protection; with emphasis on obtaining permits, interpreting permit requirements, and supporting permit compliance
  • Experience with working on large multidisciplinary projects, as discipline lead or other defined role
  • Strong computer, verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work in Canada with a valid Canadian driver's license

Preference will be given to candidates with the following:
  • Experience in Ontario
  • Experience in consulting sector
  • Experience with presenting technical information to the general public
  • Advanced statistics experience, including multivariate statistics and use of R statistical software
  • A good understanding of Federal and Provincial fisheries policies, legislation, and guidelines
