Overview / Responsibilities

Wood is currently recruiting for Biochemical Engineering Graduates to join our Darlington team, which will begin in December 2021.

In support of Wood's Life Sciences business, working with blue-chip pharmaceutical manufacturers and similar, we are looking to recruit a process graduate who specialises in Biochemical Engineering. As such, you will be involved in designing, installing, testing, analysing and improving bioprocesses as well as investigating and resolving any problems which relate to bioprocess, equipment or biologics products.

You will also be expected to contribute to the management and optimisiation of costs associated with bioprocesses and biologics products, and to support Change & Modifications relating to equipment and bioprocess.

You will possess significant, technical understanding in Biochemical/Bioprocess Engineering. It is expected that you will demonstrate in-depth technical and theoretical knowledge in Biochemical/Bioprocess Engineering and be viewed as a specialist in this area by peers.

Skills / Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

It is essential you are educated to:

Degree level (or equivalent) in Bioengineering or Biochemical/Bioprocess Engineering discipline , or have a degree in Chemical / Process engineering, augmented be either:



  • A Master's degree level (or equivalent) postgraduate qualification in Bioengineering or Biochemical/Bioprocess Engineering discipline
  • A PhD (or equivalent) in Bioengineering or Biochemical/Bioprocess Engineering discipline.
    Any degree (Bachelor or Masters) MUST be accredited by the IChemE to be valid for this role.

Role-Specific Skills:

A thorough understanding is essential of:



  • Biologics manufacture
  • GMP regulatory considerations including validation
  • Safety requirements including pressure systems
  • HAZOP and contained processing aspects.

Chartered status with a relevant professional institution i.e., IChemE is something the candidate will be expected to pursue.
Other Knowledge, skills and experience:



  • Proficient user of Excel and other Microsoft software
  • Good communication skills essential
  • Good at growing networks, ability to work as a team or on their own
  • Self-motivated with a growth and learning mindset
  • Relevant work experience within in other organisations may be beneficial although not essential
  • Ability to work in multi-disciplinary team environments
  • Must have the right to work in UK
