Our valued client, a major oil and gas producer, is looking for a Automation Engineer/ Specialist for a contract role in Fort McMurray for a 1 year contract (could be extended). This will be a camp based rokle working on a 14/14 rotation with flights reimbursed. 


The individual will be responsible for the  Automation System Infrastructure Management and for providing Automation Industrial Hardware & Software management to the clients SAGD production facilities.  They will work as a part of an integrated team within the Surmont business unit to manage, maintain, influence and execute changes to sustain and improve the performance of the facility programmable automation & control systems.

Accountabilities and End Results:

• Automation System Infrastructure Management and Automation Industrial Hardware & Software
- Computer and network hardware & software life cycle management
- System administration & security management, system software updates
- System maintenance, repair and troubleshooting
- Computer and network system performance
- DCS, PLC, RTU, SCADA, HMI, Industrial Network life cycle management
- Industrial Hardware system performance
- Scheduled preventative maintenance and reactive maintenance including operations support
- Project support for system implementation

Primary Functions:

• Promote, support and adhere to Client Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) management system
• Ensure HSE issues are given priority consideration by complying with all corporate and operating procedures to align with corporate safety standards and expectations
• Programmable Automation System (PAS) Infrastructure management
o System Maintenance and break fix response
• PAS Hardware & Software management
o Manage system software licensing, software migration, and system recovery management
o Provide input to process control network topology and architecture design, specification, configuration, testing, start-up, and system support
o Assist with virus and service pack definitions
o Manage the site automation disaster recovery plan
o Maintain software applications on the control network
o Perform Control systems hardware and software maintenance/upgrades.
o Review, test, and deploy migrations to the PCN's Operating Systems
• PAS Administration
o Control Network Administrator
o Manage System Security
o Manage user logon profiles
o Assist with Firewall & Fibre network administration
• Operations trouble shooting support for day to day PAS issues
• Perform Control system configuration in support of the Applications Engineering team
o Including Regulatory Control, Advanced Regulatory Control, Advanced Process Control, Graphics and Alarm management
• Work in collaboration with the Calgary Applications team in support of capital projects
• Maintain System documentation in accordance with engineering deliverables and team procedures


  • 5+ years of related industry experience, preferably in a heavy oil processing or downstream owner operated industrial facility.
  • Knowledge of continuous & process control, discrete/ sequential control, distributed control systems, programmable logic controllers.
  • Knowledge of computer system administration
  • Knowledge of SCADA systems and data historians
  • Programming experience, C/C++, VB, IEC- 61131 five industry standard programming language
  • Interpretation of critical documents such as P&ID, shutdown key, electrical drawings, datasheets, instrument index, control system database

  • Honeywell Experion PKS DCS & C200/300 Controllers, Pi Historian
  • Yokogawa Centum VP DCS, Prosafe RS SIS, Stardom RTU
  • Rockwell Control Logix PLC, Factory Talk and PanelView HMI
  • Modicon Unity PLCs
  •  ControlNet, DeviceNet, Modbus Plus, and Fault Tolerant Ethernet industrial communication networks.
  • Bristol Babcock Controlwave Micro RTU and BSAP Communications
  • Licensed frequency radio communications systems
  • ISA CAP and Cisco CCNA Certifications a plus
  • Experience with Microsoft OS, networked systems, and Fibre optics
