Major Functional Responsibilities:

  • Be able to understand, comprehend and follow verbal and written instructions from his supervisors in English.
  • Arrive at work on time at the rig site. Have necessary transportation to and from work.
  • Be able to perform all duties needed to rig up, drill, rig down, and maintain rotary equipment.
  • Be capable of performing the following:
  1. Pull rotary slips.
  2. Latch and unlatch elevators.
  3. Work tongs for extended periods of time.
  4. Lift and carry mud sacks that weigh 100 pounds for short distances.
  5. Scrub and paint the rig.
  6. Perform maintenance on the rig as instructed.
  7. Work at different heights above ground level on rig equipment.
  8. Be able to use hand tools.
  • Be able to work a 7x7 work schedule, twelve hours a day. On occasion, be able to work additional hours when called upon.

Physical Job Requirements:

  • Balancing- maintaining equilibrium to prevent falling when moving, walking, standing, kneeling, or crouching.
  • Climbing- going up or down ladders, stairs, ramps, or other objects using hands, arms, feet and legs. Climbing is required about 40%-60% of the time in a normal workday.
  • Crouching- bending the body downward and forward by bending legs and spine in a bent over position. Crouching is required about 40%-60% of the time in a normal workday.
  • Finger Agility & Dexterity- Feeling, picking, pinching, and other similar tasks that require finger motion. Feeling and Fingering are required about 40% of the time in a normal workday.
  • Grasping- Gripping or applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm holding an object in the hand. Handling is required about 60%-80% of the time in a normal workday.
  • Hearing- The ability to clearly and concisely perceive sounds, the ability to hear and understand detailed oral communications, and the ability to hear subtle changes or discriminations in sound.
  • Kneeling- bending legs at the knees or working on one or both knees. Kneeling is required about 30%-60% of the time in a normal workday.
  • Lifting- raising or lowering objects in a vertical direction, particularly heavy bulky objects.
  • Moving- moving objects backward, forward, in or out in a horizontal direction, particularly heavy or bulky objects.
  • Pulling- Exerting a steady backward, downward, upward, or outward force against an object-jerking, wrenching, stretching, towing, dragging, or tugging objects in a sustained motion. Pulling is required about 40%-60% of the time in a normal workday
  • Pushing- Pressing against something with steady forward, downward, upward, or outward force - shoving, punching, compressing, squeezing, mashing, packing, pressing, jamming, compacting, or squashing objects in a sustained motion. Pushing is required about 40-60% of the time in a normal workday.
  • Reaching- Extending the hand(s) and/or arms(s) in any direction. Reaching is required about 30%-60% of the time in a normal workday.
  • Seeing- The ability to accurately see objects and detect motion.
  1. Near Vision- required from 40%-60% of the time in a normal workday. Corrections needed to a minimum of 20/50 one eye.
  2. Far Vision- required from 40%-60% of the time in a normal workday. Corrections needed to a minimum of 20/50 one eye.
  3. Depth Perception- required from 40%-60% of the time in a normal workday.
  4. Visual Accommodation- required from 40%-60% of the time in a normal workday.

  • Standing- is required about 60%-80% of the time in a normal workday. A Driller is on his feet most of the day.
  • Stooping- bending the body downward and forward by bending the spine at the waist - using the lower extremities and back muscles. Stooping is required about 40%-60% of the time in a normal workday.
  • Talking- expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken work. Conveying detailed instructions to other workers accurately, loudly and/or quickly. Talking is required about 40% to 60% of the time in a normal workday
  • Walking- moving on foot, particularly on hard, unlevel, or wet surfaces. Walking is required about 40%-60% of the time in a normal workday.

Physical Modifiers:

  • Heavy Work Conditions- the job requires a frequent exertion of a heavy force. It is usually necessary to frequently carry heavy objects.
  • Repetitive Motion Conditions- Substantial movements (motions) of most body joint and parts.

Environmental Modifiers:

  • The job involves exposure to cold working conditions - temperatures (including wind chill effects) below freezing for periods longer than 30 minutes.
  • The job involves exposure to hot working conditions - temperatures above 100 degrees Fahrenheit for periods in excess of 30 minutes.
  • The job involves exposure to noise - workers must wear protective hearing equipment and frequently shout in order to be heard above the ambient noise level.

  1. Maximum weight lifted is 120 lbs.
  2. Maximum weight lifted occasionally is 100 lbs.
  3. Maximum weight lifted frequently is 70 lbs.
  4. Maximum weight lifted continuously is 25 lbs.
  5. Two or more lifting occurs frequently with various tools that weigh over 100 lbs. or are too bulky for one person to handle.
  • Carrying is required about 40%-60% in normal workday.
  1. Maximum weight carried is 100 lbs.
  2. Maximum distance carried is 200 yards.
  3. Duties include carrying large bulky objects to and from the supply area to the rig.
