Overview / Responsibilities

Wood is expanding it's Advisory Services business and is recruiting for an experienced Principal Consultant to join the Waste and Resource Management team.

As a Principal Consultant, you will lead projects, lead proposal development and support business development activities. In addition to these activities, we are looking for a lead on waste data management tasks - focused on waste flow modelling and carbon assessment tasks. You will be working on strategic projects in the UK and internationally, for local authorities and private sector clients, therefore adaptability and flexibility are essential. As part of our wider Advisory Services team, you will be working to enhance our portfolio of sustainability projects, overlapping with our circular economy, decarbonisation and environmental policy capabilities

The range of projects you could expect to contribute to include:
  • Leading and providing support on projects across a wide range of waste and resources management themes, with a focus on waste data management, modelling and carbon assessment across collections and treatment / processing / disposal functions.
  • Supporting procurement exercises including assessing contract extension proposals, developing tender specifications and associated documentation and evaluating bidder submissions or working with bidders to develop and review their proposals
  • Leading options appraisals with clients to identify best value options for service development
  • The development of business cases to support the delivery of services differently, whether that be through a change of collection method or service management model
  • The analysis of the composition of waste and the statistical manipulation of data to provide representative waste profiles. Waste collection service reviews to analyse the effectiveness and efficiency of existing services to identify improvements and savings for clients; and
  • The identification and performance and cost modelling of alternative waste collection scenarios and assessing any consequential impacts on contracts, infrastructure, budgets, performance and customers

Key Duties and Responsibilities
  • Manage projects: applying our internal procedures ensuring that projects are well monitored, delivered on-time and within budget with high client satisfaction ratings
  • Act as technical expert providing input in to a range of waste and environment-related projects. This will include taking responsibility for the drafting of whole reports (with input from others) or contributing to aspects as directed
  • Attend and lead meetings and workshops with clients from inception stage to final reporting. Such meetings may be attended by a range of stakeholders and clients including Council officers, members and frontline staff, private sector representatives from a number of sectors and other organisations such as WRAP and Defra
  • Lead and support the development of proposals
  • Develop and deliver services and task delivery methodologies that are innovative, robust, time and cost effective and client focussed
  • Build and maintain relationships with existing clients, potential clients and other networks to maintain and increase the profile of the company and to develop work pipelines


Skills / Qualifications

Experience

Essential
  • Extensive consultancy experience of providing innovative solutions to public and private sector clients
  • A demonstrable track record in developing waste and resource management solutions, working with organisations to implement change and be in possession of strong project and client management skills
  • Skilled in using business management systems, business development, proposal writing, report writing and data analysis
  • A n understanding of waste and recycling management systems
  • Understanding of waste legislation and policy in the UK
  • Experience of working with Officers and elected members at a senior level
  • An understanding of local authority governance, pressures, constraints and opportunities
  • An understanding of waste strategies and the options available to implement them
  • Experience of analysing operational and financial data to identify and understand the root causes of issues, and develop solutions
  • Waste data management and modelling, including carbon assessments and the use of impact assessment tools such as WRATE
  • H igh levels of written and verbal communication skills and confident delivery of presentations
  • Excellent time management skills, including the ability to respond to requests for outputs at short notice.
  • An ability to innovate and tailor solutions to meet evolving requirements is critical to the role


Desirable
  • Experience across local authority waste collection and disposal functions or close involvement in local authority services through joint working, partnership activities or project-specific activities
  • Experience of working within a technical consultancy environment or within a client organisation involving direct contact with consultants or consultancy projects
  • Experience of working within a private sector waste services company supporting the provision of services to local government and private sector customers

Qualifications

Essential
  • Degree qualified (or equivalent) in a relevant subject, expected to be in the field of science, environment or engineering
  • UK driving licence

Desirable
  • Chartered status with a relevant organisation (eg CIWM, SocEnv)
