Overview / Responsibilities

Wood has an immediate, full-time employment opportunity for a Junior Wildlife Biologist/Technician in either Regina or Saskatoon, SK. The successful candidate will join our team of Biologists and Environmental Technicians working on a broad range of resource development projects in western and northern Canada.

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will work within the Environment and Regulatory Team under the supervision of the Discipline Lead. Primary responsibilities will be to provide support on a wide variety of projects as delegated by the Discipline Lead. This will involve the following:

 

  • Conducting general and species-specific wildlife surveys, including for species of conservation concern
  • Completing data entry and assisting with data quality control
  • Performing background research and analysis
  • Assisting with applications and submissions to regulatory agencies
  • Contributing to report preparation, including documenting existing conditions, ecological sensitivities, and potential project impacts
  • Assisting with proposal preparation
  • Communicating effectively with staff, contractors, and clients

 


Skills / Qualifications

The position requires that the successful candidate has a solid technical and/or academic background. Key requirements include:

 

 

  • A B.Sc. in Biology/Ecology or other appropriate discipline, or technical diploma in Integrated Resource Management or related field
  • Junior level of experience (2 to 3 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent)
  • Strong wildlife identification skills (visual, auditory and signs)
  • Field experience with wildlife surveys
  • A good understanding of wildlife habitat requirements, particularly for species of conservation concern
  • Willingness to travel and work flexible hours under a variety of field conditions
  • Excellent written and oral communication
  • Strong computer skills and experience with MS Office programs

 


Preference will be given to candidates with the following:

 

 

  • Field experience in the Canadian prairies
  • Experience in the consulting sector
  • A Registered Professional Biologist/Ecologist, Biologist-in-Training, or eligibility with the Alberta Society of Professional Biologists
  • Understanding of federal and provincial environmental policies, legislation, and guidelines
  • Experience completing surveys for species of conservation concern
  • Knowledge of standard field protocols for a range of species detection surveys in western Canada
  • Working knowledge of ArcGIS and other GIS products
  • Current First Aid certificate is an asset
