Overview / Responsibilities

Wood has an immediate, full-time employment opportunity for a Junior Biologist in Calgary, AB. The successful candidate will join our natural sciences team working on a range of fisheries or wildlife projects in western and northern Canada. Candidates with a background in both aquatics and wildlife are encouraged to apply.


The principal responsibilities of the position entails conducting field studies, data entry and analysis, and communicating results through technical reports. The successful candidate will also assist with field survey logistics, equipment maintenance, health and safety plans, and scheduling. The successful candidate will be able to work independently as a field crew member and/or leader and as part of multi-disciplinary teams.

The successful candidate will have the following essential qualifications:


  • A bachelor's degree in fisheries / aquatic biology, or wildlife biology / natural resource management
  • 2 or more years of professional environmental consulting experience
  • Experience with fish and habitat inventory standard methods in lakes and streams
  • Experience in conducting wildlife surveys
  • Ability to work in urban and remote locations
  • Valid Class 5 AB driver's license
  • Experience with off-highway vehicles (i.e., argo) and trailer towing
  • Strong technical writing and verbal communication skills


The following qualifications are assets for the posted position:



  • Experience with fish inventory and aquatic habitat assessment techniques
  • Experience conducting stream crossing assessments
  • Experience with limnology, water quality, and hydrology sampling methods
  • Experience in permitting and compliance monitoring
  • Experience in habitat restoration/enhancement/assessment
  • Experience with the following: fish life history and habitat requirements (particularly Alberta fish species), toxicology and fish health, sampling/analysis of benthic invertebrates, zooplankton, phytoplankton, and/or periphyton
  • Experience identifying birds by sight and sound
  • Experience handling amphibian species
  • Experience identifying wildlife signs (i.e., tracks, scats, dens)
  • Experience identifying plants
  • Strong working knowledge of provincial (i.e., Alberta, BC, Saskatchewan, NWT) and federal environmental legislation
  • Proposal writing and project management experience
  • Dataset management including MS Access
  • Excellent time management and organization skills
  • Electrofishing Certification
  • Swiftwater Rescue Certification
  • Pleasure Craft Operator Certification
