Overview / Responsibilities

Wood is currently seeking a Senior Architect & Department Manager to join our Life Sciences team of industry-leading technology experts, facility design specialists, and project managers to develop life-changing and in many cases, life-saving solutions for our clients.

We're looking for an energetic, self-motivated individual with the ability to execute all phases of design and a desire to build an Architectural department. Your responsibilities will be split between project architecture and department management. Project sizes will vary and will include both existing building improvements and new construction.

Responsibilities:

Project Architecture
  • Lead an architectural design team through all phases of design: initial programming, planning, feasibility & concept development, preliminary design, detailed design, and construction documentation
  • Display a solid working knowledge of the International Building Code (IBC) and construction document preparation (e.g. graphics, detailing, and specifications) as well as organization and distribution during all stages of development (e.g. review, bid, permit, etc.)
  • Provide a wide range of ground-level architectural services while maintaining a sense of urgency and prioritization of tasks
  • Coordinate and prepare contract documents, including drawings and specifications
  • Review and rectify the design related to all applicable Codes and produce documents including Life-Safety, Egress, and General Code Compliance drawings and narratives
  • Coordinate multiple-discipline overlays, construction techniques, and sequences
  • Perform site observations such as recording and reporting of existing conditions and construction progress
  • Effectively addresses problems, questions, and provide approvals through construction
  • Write reports such as feasibility studies, design criteria, and recommendations
  • Coordination of all aspects of other disciplines as they affect the building envelope and interior
  • Lead the coordination of Architectural documents being completed by multiple Wood offices

Architectural Department Management
  • Direct supervision of a talented and growing architectural department:
    • Forecast workload for department, provide staffing needs to Director of Engineering
    • Ensure each group member is fully billable
    • Assignment of team members to projects
    • Schedule regular meetings to foster communication and development
    • Perform mid and end of year reviews
    • Help to set employee performance goals for the year
  • Desire to grow the department
  • Assist in recruiting, interviewing, and selection of new candidates
  • Develop and implement training initiatives for the department
  • Support proposals by authoring technical sections


Skills / Qualifications

Skills/Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Architecture (5-year program) or Master of Architecture (M.Arch.)
  • Architectural licensure required
  • Minimum 10 years' experience
  • Previous pharmaceutical architectural design experience required
  • Willingness and Qualifications to obtain NCARB certification in multiple states
  • Knowledgeable with architectural software packages: AutoCAD, Revit, Sketchup
  • Experience in preparing Specifications preferred
  • Flexibility to travel (~10%) required
  • Knowledge of cGMPs preferred
  • International experience a plus
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, decision making capabilities, problem resolution skills, and a sense of initiative are important for this industry
