We currently have an opportunity for an Civil Engineering Apprentice - Geotechnics & Tunnelling. The successful individual will work towards achieving a Level 6 Civil Engineering Apprenticeship qualification.

The Geotechnical Engineering Apprentice will play a role in providing technical solutions on projects delivered by the Jacobs. They will also work with others within the multi-disciplinary team and assist in the production of designs and associated deliverables for projects.

We are continuing to grow our Ground Engineering group in the UK and are looking for people to join our team who have the passion and drive to add value and shape positive solutions for major projects across the world.

The successful person will join a respected and ambitious company with excellent career prospects and international opportunities. You will work as part of a diverse and highly skilled team of engineering geologists, and geotechnical engineers, providing support and advice to the wider Jacobs business and clients. There will be opportunities for a wide range of responsibilities and roles within the Ground Engineering team aimed at developing your career.

Responsibilities involve:

  • Production of CAD drawings, and developing design skills
  • Generation of 3D ground models and cross sections
  • Use and generation of routines to automate generation of designs and drawings
  • Preparation of simple calculations to support design development
  • Supporting the administration & delivery of projects
  • Ensuring design outputs meet the required standards
  • Meeting agreed deadlines
  • Working as an integral member of a design delivery team
  • Contributing to providing solutions to challenging problems
  • Working both in an office environment and on site


  • Achieved a grade C/4 or above in at least 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) including Mathematics and English AND holds 3 A Levels (or equivalent) in any subject OR aLevel 3 qualification in Structural Engineering

Desirable Skills & Characteristics:
  • Strong numeracy skills
  • Confident communication skills both written and verbal
  • Experience of using MS office packages; particularly Microsoft Excel

You should be able to demonstrate that you are:
  • A well-mannered and professional individual with a positive 'can do' attitude. Proactive in nature who takes pride in 'getting things done' to a high standard.
  • Able to demonstrate a keen interest in a career in Geotechnical Engineering within the engineering & construction environment.
