Based in Oakland, CA, the Senior Engineer will create the design of energy conservation and renewable energy; measures, audit specifications and develops opportunities, in the detailed opportunity assessment and program development phases. The Senior Engineer will be working in a team based environment, at the direction of the Project Management Advisor as well as their supervisor.

What you'll do:
  • Evaluate utility data to verify existing customer loads, consider rate change options and calculate energy and water cost savings
  • Perform renewable energy including solar PV and energy storage system site surveys and understand metering and measurement tools and data.
  • Evaluate various types and locations of renewable energy systems.
  • Identify HVAC, lighting, solar PV, battery storage, energy management systems, and domestic water conservation opportunities for each project and have a basic understanding of microgrid operations.
  • Develop HVAC and energy management systems' engineering designs and specifications under the supervision of the Project Management Advisor or Senior Engineer Advisor.
  • With guidance from the Project Management Advisor, prepare all bid documents and construction documents that, along with the specification and drawings, will comprise HVAC, lighting, solar PV, battery storage, energy management systems and domestic water conservation construction documents.
  • Work with the Project Management Advisor, prepares cost estimates of basic HVAC, lighting, solar PV, battery storage, energy management systems and domestic water conservation measures. Obtains third-party quotes and evaluates the costs.
  • With minimal assistance from the Project Management Advisor, prepare the entire Program Development Agreement report except for financials and executive summary.
  • Lead and direct an energy management system's commissioning effort.
  • Perform savings analysis including comparison of technologies, savings calculations, scopes of work and contractor bid costs for lighting and water measures using tools such as eQuest, Energy Pro and Excel spreadsheets, including bin simulations.
  • Calculate potential solar generation quantities and savings of various scenarios using the PVSyst modeling and Energy Toolbase tool.
  • Prepare utility and other incentive program applications, permit packages and customer submittals.
  • Assist the Project and Construction Management Advisors on job walks, bid evaluations, contractor negotiations, and during construction meetings.
  • Assist during the construction phase of the project by reviewing submittals, change orders, and RFI's, and make recommendations to the Project Management Advisor.

What you bring:
  • Bachelor's Degree in an engineering related field.
  • 5 - 7 years of experience in the commerical sector.
  • Fundamentals of Engineering or CA Professional Engineering License (preferred).
  • Working knowledge of utility rate schedules including TOU and demand charges structures.
  • Solid working knowledge of HVAC and/or solar photovoltaic systems, including the ability to identify different systems and equipment, identify potential energy savings measures, and quantify the potential energy savings and costs.
  • Understand metering and measurement tools and the data provided.
  • Competent in computer modeling software programs, such as PVyst, Helioscope, Energy Tool Base, EQuest or Trane Trace, and apply them in preparing the PDA.
  • Proficient at performing load take-offs from drawings.
  • Proficient knowledge, reading and understanding of engineering plan sets (both electrical and mechanical with civil a plus).
  • Demonstrate good written and verbal communication skills in report writing and correspondence.
  • Proficient at computer modeling/simulation of building operation.
  • Excellent communication skills with employees and customers.
  • Up to 40% travel, with occasional overnight stays.
