#LI-HC1Role Synopsis:
Advanced Bio & Physical Sciences for Low Carbon Energy (AB&PS) develops strategic and business solutions for new low carbon technologies and products. A recently created team, AB&PS is the central research organisation for biosciences, chemistry, chemical engineering science, materials sciences, biofuels, green hydrogen/electrochemistry and the science of carbon capture. This team also hosts bp's capability in computational modelling of biosciences and chemistry.

The bp Biosciences Center (BSC) in San Diego is the hub for bp's biosciences R&D capability. The BSC works to identify current opportunities and assess future opportunities across the range of bp's businesses, supporting bp's ambition to reach net zero by 2050 or sooner. The Center stays closely connected to bp businesses and external technologies, and ensures the expertise required to progress opportunities through the early stages of technology development. The Center also advises businesses on biological issues and partnership opportunities. The team is comprised of flexible, agile, multi-skilled, innovative members that work collaboratively across the research portfolio.

The Manager, Biosciences will report to the VP, advanced bio & physical sciences for Low carbon energy and will lead:
Research for advanced bio conversion technologies and processes
Research on bio-intermediates for bio and chemical processes
Feedstock leverage
CO2 bio-utilization platform

Primary Accountabilities:
  • Provide leadership to the biosciences team, including 4 direct reports. Responsible for the biosciences team's day-to-day activities, mentoring and developing biosciences team staff, managing resource allocation and R&D decision making.
  • Managing and overseeing biosciences team's projects in the AP&BS portfolio.
  • In collaboration with other leads within the AP&BS team, optimize biosciences R&D collaborations, to deliver high quality science, and add value to support business's objectives.
  • Reaffirm and ensure safe and reliable operations across the biosciences team's assets, including internal, as well as partnerships, academic collaborations or contract-based activities.
  • Play a critical role in the strategic development of bp's biosciences capabilities, providing linkage to emerging technologies in the biotech and bioenergy spaces, and explore value-added opportunities to inform bp's biosciences and low carbon energy strategy.

Essential Education: PhD degree (biochemistry, analytical chemistry, molecular biology, biology, chemistry or related fields) with 8+ years of relevant biotech industrial R&D experience. Experience must be proven by a track record of publications, patents and presentations.

Essential criteria:
  • Excellent and comprehensive knowledge and skills in a broad range of biosciences fields, including strain engineering, biochemical pathways, protein engineering, enzyme mechanism/kinetics, system biology, fermentation and analytical sciences.
  • Ability to provide expert and innovative advice, to develop solutions to complex technical issues.
  • Ability to prioritize responsibilities, show flexibility in response to changed priorities and work effectively in a multi-tasking, agile, fast pace, and matrixed environment.
  • Must be motivated, possess excellent interpersonal and strong organizational skills, communicate well within and between teams and be able to work under tight deadlines.
  • Excellent strategic thinking skills. Participate in project strategy development and implementation, including the development of intellectual property.

Desirable Criteria:
  • Strong experience in biochemist, enzymology and protein engineering
  • Knowledge of bioinformatics, systems biology and enzyme computational design
  • Knowledge of lab scale fermentation
