About the opportunity

This is an opportunity help shape the way we deliver, grow & diversify our hydraulic modelling services across the UK. You will challenge the way we do things today and reinvent how we do things in the future and take responsibility for driving technical excellence across multiple business sectors.

As Head of Discipline (HoD) for Hydraulic Modelling, you will have three main areas of responsibility;
  • Developing and implementing a strategy for achieving technical excellence in fluvial, estuary and surface water modelling throughout our Water Catchment Management (WCM) business unit in the UK
  • Driving and supporting new techniques and technologies so that we are prepared for the future
  • A hands-on role in bidding and delivering projects to external and internal clients

  • Reporting to the Head of Technical Excellence for WCM, you will coordinate with the other HoDs (Flood Risk Management, Water Science and Hydromorphology, Hydrogeology, Project Management, River Engineering, Surface Water Drainage, Hydrology and Hydro-infomatics) providing technical and organisational leadership consistently across the portfolio of projects.

    Your key responsibilities as HoD will be;
    • Discipline leadership - Organisation and influence across the technical area
    • Driving technical assurance and excellence in project delivery - Developing processes, applied learning, raising technical standards
    • Developing people - Designing, overseeing and monitoring a programme of training (with accountability for budgets) and tactical recruitment
    • Preparing us for growth - Forecasting future technical needs, supporting innovation, identifying IT infrastructure needs
    • Raising the discipline profile - Planning, coordinating and delivering internal and external profile-raising activities

    We have a well established team in the UK and strong connections with our hydraulic modelling teams across the globe. As HoD for hydraulic modelling in the UK, you will be responsible for integrating with this international network sharing resources and expertise and operating as one global team. You will work with our global leads to look at how markets and technologies are changing and prepare us for a new future.


    • Experienced in providing inspirational and transformative leadership in a business environment
    • Evidence of successful technical leadership in 1 and 2D Hydraulic Modelling across a range of modelling platforms and groups of staff over a sustained period of time. This must include the Flood Modeller and Tuflow software platforms.
    • Experienced in technical coordination of multi-disciplinary teams undertaking studies for hydrology and hydraulic modelling for major UK infrastructure projects and for a range of different clients.
    • Good connections with leading UK modelling practitioners through industry forums and institutions
    • Highly experienced in writing and reviewing technical reports and in the production, checking and reviewing of deliverables.
    • Excellent presentation skills with experience of presenting to existing and potential clients, to regulators and stakeholders on behalf of clients, at meetings and within working teams
    • Experienced in writing compelling proposals and estimating the costs associated with modelling hydrological engineering studies, with evidence of successful winning of work and delivery within budgets
    • Ability to provide training and development of staff in basic fluid mechanics and sophisticated hydraulic modelling across a range of software platforms

    • Recognised industry profile
    • Up to date with current research on methods for modelling of natural processes, natural flood management, catchment pathway interventions
    • Computational Fluid Dynamics modelling
    • A working knowledge of the software platforms and method for clean, waste and ground modelling
