Jacobs is currently recruiting an engineer or scientist with Thermal Hydraulics Expertise to join our Advanced Reactors business and develop their skills and experience to work with our team and support our clients.

As the demand for our expertise continues to grow, an opportunity has arisen to work in the area of nuclear engineering, specialising in thermal hydraulics analysis, working in our Knutsford office to support a number of UK and international nuclear projects.

You will be a key part of our team, supporting a wide range of consultancy projects, small and large, for a variety of clients across the nuclear industry, including new build projects, SMR and AMRs, existing civil and defence plant, fusion reactor design and decommissioning.

Mentoring and training will be provided to support the development of your technical and professional skills throughout your career at Jacobs.
In this role you will have the opportunity to work on various applications of reactor technology, potentially including SMRs, AMRs, fusion reactor designs and looking at reactor and associated thermal hydraulic performance, safety performance and other aspects of nuclear reactor technology. You will gain detailed knowledge of nuclear data and their application in a variety of modern physics codes, specialising in thermal hydraulic applications and associated analysis.

Key Responsibilities include:
• Developing a detailed understanding of reactor plant performance, spcialising in thermal hydraulic understanding and analysis
• Performing complex reactor physics plant and thermal hydraulics analysis
• Developing underpinning mathematical and physical theories
• Working as a team to deliver work to time, cost and customer satisfaction
• Presenting results at technical meetings and conferences where appropriate

Qualifications:

Essential
• A postgraduate degree in mathematics, physics or engineering, or any other subject with a strong mathematical component (or equivalent experience)
• A background and interest in mathematical and physical theory and their application to engineering
• Experience of undertaking thermal hydraulic calculations and using associated analytical software packages
• Good scientific programming skills
• Ability to think innovatively and to solve complex problems
• Ability to work independently, but also to seek guidance when necessary
• Ability to quickly and efficiently absorb new technical skills rather than just applying current ones
• Ability to communicate well, both verbally and in writing with internal & external experts and clients
• The ability to write well-structured reports that present clear arguments with a sound basis for recommendations
• Good interpersonal skills with the ability to work as part of a team;

Desirable
• Knowledge/experience with nuclear reactor technology and good understanding of principles of reactor plant operations
• Familiar with modelling codes / analytical software relating to reactor physics and thermal hydraulics
• Experience of undertaking thermal hydraulics calculations for Pressurised Water Reactors or other reactor types, including performance of calculations for: faults, severe accident, loss of cooling and decay heat removal conditions
• Experience of working in multifunctional teams
• Applicants with thermal analysis experience from other industries are also welcomed as comprehensive training will be provided for all successful candidates.
• Ability to lead tasks and provide guidance to more junior team members
