About the opportunity

The Associate Director will report to the Regional Director for the Northern Studio, as well as liaising closely with the UK Technical Lead, playing a key role in driving the technical capability of the regional teams. The role will provide a client facing lead for the region and ensure that Jacobs maintains the highest technical standards, client service and levels of quality.

The Associate Director plays a key role in the design leadership and discipline integration of projects delivered by the City & Places business. Using technical experience and excellent people skills, the Associate Director will manage projects and guide/mentor a team of MEP engineers to produce designs and associated deliverables in an integrated and holistic manner. The role will provide a client facing lead for the team's projects and ensure that Jacobs maintains the highest technical standards, levels of service and quality.

Main Responsibilities

As a key member of the regional multi-disciplinary design team, an Associate Director plays a crucial role in the implementation of the City & Places strategy, acting in support of the Technical lead and Regional Director skilfully balancing commercial, technical and mentoring responsibilities.

An Associate Director will be responsible for:
  • Management of a team of engineers with a range of skills and experience;
  • The delivery of technical outputs within project teams and the seamless sharing of information with other discipline teams ;
  • Ensuring technical quality through implementation of best practice and continuous improvement processes;
  • Management and coordination of team and project resources;
  • Representing Jacobs in liaising with clients, architects and other design team members;
  • Develop and maintaining excellent client relationships through successful project execution;
  • Develop talent by coaching and mentoring staff and supporting their technical and career development aspirations;
  • Assisting in the preparation of technical and commercial bid proposals;


  • Relevant experience in the design, specification and procurement of building MEP services;
  • Chartered Engineer and member of a relevant professional body, or equivalent level of experience ;
  • Ability in the MEP design and delivery of projects to a high quality, from concept to completion;
  • Ability to lead a team of engineers, liaising directly with clients, architects and other design team members;
  • Experience in the successful management of projects;
  • Experience and understanding of multi-disciplinary design processes;
  • Represent Jacobs at external meetings;
  • Sound knowledge of MEP software applications, thermal modelling and BIM and the ability to implement use on projects.
  • Ability to lead design teams to eliminate health and safety risks in the design.

An Associate Director must be an excellent communicator, capable of presenting projects and design solutions to clients and collaborating with multi-discipline teams to achieve the best results.
