About the opportunity

The role is primarily about supporting our Head of Technology for Geophysics in delivering change to increase the technical skills in one of our key growth areas, nuclear. We have many projects that use geophysics at some level, we cover many but not all of the techniques and our skill set does not cover all the elements of geophysical technological possibilities. As a result, we want to recruit a geophysicist to support the development of our geophysical services on all geotechnical projects (and contaminated land) across a range of sectors: primarily Nuclear ,Rail, Highways and Utilities and also including other emergent sectors. The role would be approximately 80% billable in the long term, the remainder of the time covered by budgeted TGE overhead developing of innovation and automation, strategic sales, geophysical capability, and business development.

We are continuing to grow the depth and breadth of the technical services that the ground engineering team can provide for our clients.

As such we need someone to understand our current level of capability and support our technical leadership team to develop a market leading geophysics team for Jacobs. We want to be able to lead sub-contractors in our supply chain, we don't intend to become a competitor to them; so, this role will help us to become an intelligent client (for data acquisition), and better understand the data to use it to the maximum on our design projects.

The role will comprise the following elements:
  • Technical Leadership:
  • Geophysics specialist who will support the HoT for Geophysics to deliver change to our technical capability on Jacobs TGE and projects
  • Co-ordinate the engineers and geologists across our geoscience and Land Quality teams who have geophysics experience
  • Promote the use of geophysics on our projects wherever the technology is likely to be beneficial to us or our clients
  • Advise and guide the team on the application of geophysical methods (which geophysics methods will be most appropriate or not) and the assessment of geophysics results (act as a reviewer)
  • Ensure the whole team is aware of our developing capability, who to talk to, and what our geophysics strategy is. Drive the cultural change within the business to help embed this as business-as-usual whilst also helping us to work at the cutting edge of technology
  • Use the opportunity of working within Jacobs' large and diverse pool of skills to identify and capitalise on related areas or activities where cross-pollination of technologies can increase or add benefit to the business, e.g. utilities, ports & maritime, land quality, etc.
  • Technical development/Innovation:
  • "raise our game" assess the skills we currently have across our geoscience teams in UK, Europe, and the Middle East and consider how these could be developed and where extra skills are needed
  • Advise on how best to take the business forwards to suit the developing technology, market needs and Jacobs projects
  • Lead the change by working with operations leaders to bring about a change in how we use geophysics
  • Project work - we expect all our senior technical geoscience staff to work on projects because that is the best way to bring about change (in terms of the success of project delivery and the skills we can offer):
  • Advise on geophysical specifications and work with specialist contractors to ensure optimum method of working
  • Critically assess the data to assess if we agree the methods of processing and interpretation and review results provided by contractor
  • Advise project teams on the meaning of the results, the confidence we can place in the findings and the use the data i.e. to determine advance soil + rock mechanics properties
  • Presentation / communication of the results to our colleagues and external clients
  • Business development - help win projects by differentiating our capability and experience from our competitors.
  • Market development - develop a strategy to maximise successful use of geophysics on our client's future programmes, this involves guiding on how the industry should develop (e.g. RWM)
  • Industry reputation - Enhance our reputation in the industry for geophysics capability and as an informed intelligent geophysical service provider.

    The successful applicant will be based in the UK and travel across the various geoscience teams leveraging his or her expertise into projects and supporting staff development. They will report to Tom Berry (Head of Engineering Geology) and ultimately Rebecca Reynolds (Head of our 400-strong team of tunnelling, geotechnics and engineering geology -TGE).

    Planned work pattern:

    50% billable initially (rising to 80% in the long term) working on the nuclear and utilities projects and various other projects that require geophysical input.

    Short and long term non-billable duties are primarily around innovation, operational sales and profile raising specifically with our Nuclear clients (RWM & LLWR). We intend that technical leadership and staff development will predominately through projects.


    • The ideal candidate will have a good understanding of the principals of geophysics and be connected to geophysical Subject Matter Experts within Jacobs and RWM's supply chain.
