About the opportunity:

We are looking to appoint a Senior Associate Director - Substation Protection and Control (Transmission & Distribution) to strengthen our substation design team with the ability to liaise directly with clients and grow our activities in transmission and distribution substation design, such as supporting National Grid, DNOs and other major clients EPC & FEED frameworks. The candidate needs to be strong technically and can utilise their skills to drive growth in our business and our people.

We have design teams based at offices in London, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff and Exeter, however we require the flexibility to work across all our offices and client locations.

Working closely with a team of experienced designers and project managers, you will undertake substation, cable and overhead line Protection and Control design and settings from scheme inception through to commissioning.

With Safety in Design uppermost in your mind, you will be designing cost-effective protection and control solutions which meet the requirements of the network owner's customer(s) and which are compliant with exacting technical demands required to protect the integrity of the networks of which they will form a part. Involvement in the design of generator connections and private distribution networks is also likely.

You will contribute to a wide range of projects, of both AIS and GIS design, including new build, extensions, asset replacement and network reconfigurations. Teamwork and communication will be of key importance as you will be working closely with other members of the design team (Plant / Substation layout, OHL, Cables, Civil etc) including our GID (Global Integrated Delivery) to deliver holistic, integrated designs which can be constructed and commissioned within very tight timescales. Your ability to bring best-practice and innovation to the design process will also be highly valued.

You need to enjoy working in a team environment and where necessary using your expertise to guide other members of staff. You'll also require the ability to lead bid preparation, deliver to tight timescales, be technically accurate and to manage several schemes simultaneously, either as the lead or as part of a team. Strong verbal and written communication skills, and excellent quantitative and problem-solving skills are essential as part of this role.

  • Bachelor's Degree and/or Masters/ or PhD in Electrical Engineering, but candidates holding HNC/ HND qualifications and proven ability will also be considered
  • Previous experience working with NG, and specifically, accreditation as a Protection and Control Engineer to TP141 (Protection & Control - Design & Settings).
  • Proven and relevant experience gained, probably with a network operator, a T & D consultancy firm or a substation OEM, in the front end / detailed design and settings of protection and control schemes (including equipment sizing and specifications) for a range of substation and circuit configurations (including EPC projects) at all systems voltages up to 400kV.
  • A successful track record in managing teams of design engineers (including our Global Integrated Delivery) to deliver solutions to cost, programme and quality.
  • The ability to respond quickly and flexibly to changing circumstances, amending your design solutions accordingly
