Role Overview:

Jacobs is currently recruiting for a Principal Mechanical Engineer, with a background in pressure systems, to support our Materials Science and Structural Integrity business.

The successful candidate will join an established engineering team predominantly supporting our materials science laboratories by carrying out activities such as designing new test rigs and modifying existing rigs to undertake new experimental activities. Many of these test rigs operate under extreme conditions, replicating pressure, temperature and chemistry conditions of nuclear power and propulsion systems while applying various types of loading to test pieces. In addition to supporting clients such as EDF Energy and Rolls-Royce through our laboratory-related activities, there is an opportunity to support wider Jacobs projects in a range of exciting areas.

Main responsibilities:
• Providing sound engineering designs for test rigs and components, including new test rigs and modifications or repairs to existing rigs.
• Taking ownership of Authority to Modify decisions for test rigs involving pressure systems and checking associated technical inputs.
• Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team to take designs from concept to completion. This will typically involve activities such as defining layouts, stress analysis, sizing calculations, material selection and production of drawings and technical specifications.
• Overseeing procurement, fabrication, installation and commissioning activities.
• Analysing engineering problems, developing and implementing solutions.
• Inspection and assessment of mechanical systems including integrity of pipework and vessels.
• Managing the configuration of rigs and associated documentation, including for pressure systems.
• Supporting more junior staff and checking their work.
• Delivering work to agreed timescales and cost.
• Supporting project/bid managers in preparing bids and project management.


The successful candidate will have the following:
• Good working knowledge and experience of pressure systems, including Pressure Systems Safety Regulations (PSSR).
• Sufficient experience to take ownership of engineering design decisions and approvals of modifications and designs, including for pressure systems.
• Educated to degree level in mechanical engineering.
• Experience of mechanical engineering design.
• Capable of dealing with real problems in a practical manner, with a focus on buildability.
• Solid technical ability and analytical skills.
• Capable of developing innovative solutions.
• A strong focus on safety.
• Good organisational skills, time management and ability to plan own workload.
• The ability to work well in multi-disciplinary teams.
• Experience of test rig design is desirable.
• Experience of completing mechanical projects from conception through to commissioning is desirable.
• Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status is desirable but not essential.
• Experience working in the nuclear industry or other safety critical industries is desirable.
• Experience of using relevant software packages (for example Inventor/AutoCAD and finite element analysis packages) is desirable.
