About the opportunity

We are continuing to grow the depth and breadth of the technical services that our geoscience and geo-engineering teams can provide for our clients. As a result, we are recruiting an experienced geo-environmental specialist to join our Land Quality team (within our Water & Environment business unit) to enhance our team strength in providing high quality geo-environmental advice to our clients. The role will require flexibility to work across a range of sectors including nuclear, rail, highways, utilities and water and also including other emergent sectors.

The successful candidate will be working within the UK and Europe Land Quality team, which includes over 70 contamination specialists that provide strategic advice and innovative solutions to manage our clients' subsurface environmental liabilities. The assumed location at this stage is either our Manchester First Street or Warrington office, with an option to work at our Westlakes office in Cumbria if that is preferred. It may be necessary to be based in other Jacobs offices or at our client offices or sites as projects require.

You will need to be a team player, capable of developing a network of contacts with clients and within the wider Jacobs team. You will need to be willing to work away from your base office, with a high level of personal responsibility and show an adaptable and flexible approach to a range of project requirements. Commercial awareness is essential.

The individual we seek should have good all-round technical expertise in geo-environmental work, with experience of infrastructure and development projects with knowledge of the nuclear sector being particularly beneficial. Chartered status with an appropriate professional body would be preferred.


The candidate will be expected to meet the majority of the following requirements.
  • Possess a good undergraduate degree in a relevant subject (Geology, Earth Science, Chemistry, Environmental or Engineering related discipline).
  • Hold an MSc in a relevant subject.
  • Previous geo-environmental consulting experience including a mixture of site and office-based work.
  • Be able to undertake detailed quantitative risk assessment for human health and/or controlled waters.
  • Have a good understanding of Materials Management Plans and the CL:AIRE Definition of Waste: Development Industry Code of Practice.
  • Committed to health and safety and experienced in mentoring junior staff in safe working practices.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills and the ability to work as part of a large multi-disciplinary team and build positive working relationships.
  • Hold a full driving licence.
  • Have the ability to produce well-presented and accurate reports is essential in this role and a willingness to learn new skills and apply them in a consultancy setting.
