Overview / Responsibilities
We are looking for a consultant to join our Water Quality team to help deliver projects focusing on the surface water quality regulatory framework ranging from UK national and EU level to site specific assessments.
This is an exciting opportunity to join a team working on a wide range of projects at all scales from policy making to boots on the ground investigations. Our Water Quality team are experts in developing solutions to challenges from diffuse and point source pollution. We provide an end to end service including design, conceptualisation, planning, risk assessment, risk mapping, source apportionment, contaminant fate and transport modelling, monitoring network design field-based monitoring, sampling and surveying. We are experts in groundwater protection and in the development of catchment management evidence base, action plan and measures effectiveness assessment, as well as tool development for the UK water sector, Defra, DWI, Natural England, Natural Resources Wales, the Environment Agency, SEPA and Local Authorities.
You will have a working knowledge of how the WFD is implemented in the UK, some experience of use of the industry standard SAGIS SIMCAT, as well as some experience in managing project or task delivery.
The location of this role is flexible, and we can offer locations across the UK, including London, Reading, Bristol, Shrewsbury, Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Glasgow.
Your role will focus on delivering and supporting winning work for commercial and government customers. This will include project management and client facing roles, as well water quality inputs to major infrastructure development projects as part of larger project teams. You will also provide technical experience and help to develop the skills and expertise of more junior staff.
You will provide technical support to a variety of projects, often as part of multi-disciplinary teams, through the provision of data analysis and the development and implementation of models to simulate water quality, interpretation of model output and preparation of reports and presentations.
You will be a highly motivated, numerate candidate with excellent communication and report writing skills as well as an interest in water quality and numerical modelling. You will have the ability to apply technical knowledge in analysing problems and finding solutions to new challenges.
Alongside project delivery, you will also lead and contribute to the preparation of winning proposals. You will also play a key role in maintaining and building our technical knowledge and innovation base, keeping up to date with the latest policy and regulatory developments with respect to water quality and the water environment.
Skills / Qualifications
We are seeking a highly motivated, numerate individual a strong interest in water quality. This post will suit you if you have already established a career in environmental consultancy or regulation and are looking to develop to the next level. Specifically, we are looking for the following qualifications and experience:
- You will have post-graduate experience preferably gained in a consultancy or regulatory environment.
- You should have a good understanding of legislation covering water quality including the Water Framework Directive.
- A track record of delivering water quality projects, including assessing and mitigating the impacts of different sources of diffuse and point source pollution on surface water quality including use of SAGIS SIMCAT and Farmscoper models.
- You will have practical experience in at least some of the following: use of MS Office tools (Excel, Access); use of GIS packages such as ArcGIS.
- Practical project or task management experience;
- Strong numerical and analytical skills, excellent communication and the ability to write concise, reports.
You will ideally have the following qualifications:
- A relevant technical first degree, potentially with further post-graduate qualification
- Membership of a relevant technical body, such as CIWEM
A full driving licence is required for this role.
