Overview / Responsibilities
Wood is seeking a motivated Environmental Engineer with a minimum of 2 years environmental/consulting experience, that enjoys technical challenges as well as client, regulatory agency and public interaction. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing technical assistance for the investigation and remediation of contaminated sites primarily in the Southeast with the opportunity to support projects across the U.S. The position will include a combination of field oversight and office task management responsibilities.
Field activities may include reconnaissance of project sites, site investigation activities, remedial system construction oversight and operations and maintenance (O&M), leading field teams. Office activities will include assistance with developing project scopes of work and cost estimates, coordinating with subcontractors, conducting analysis and interpretation of investigation data, preparation of remedial investigation reports, and providing support to project managers.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct Phase II ESAs and Remedial Site Investigations including conducting field work independently and as part of a team
- Site investigation activities may include oversight of drilling activities (direct-push technology, hollow-stem auger, rotosonic, use of hydraulic profiling tool and other methods, as applicable), and installation of monitoring wells in accordance with applicable regulatory codes
- Conducting sampling of various environmental media
- Collect waste characterization samples for laboratory analysis
- Perform routine O&M of soil, groundwater and vapor treatment systems
- Troubleshooting and resolving treatment system operation malfunctions and deficiencies of LNAPL, SVE, groundwater pump and treat and sub-slab depressurization systems
- Perform field oversight of remediation or construction subcontractors, field observations and data collection, and field sampling
- Compile, organize, and evaluate field and laboratory data for incorporation into technical reports
- Prepare work plans and investigation reports
- Participate in proposal preparation and project planning including developing work scope, task-level budgets, and cost estimates; may perform calculations, gather or review information, prepare initial remedial designs, or prepare standard sections of proposals
- Ability and willingness to travel to project sites in North Carolina and out of state - Approximately 25% overnight travel
- Strong commitment to company's safety program; follow company safety standards, site safety standards and maintain safe workplace practices
Skills / Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in a related field, such as civil, environmental or mechanical engineering
- 2+ years of experience with environmental tasks in support of site investigation or remediation
- Knowledge of North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality Hazardous Waste Section guidance, UST Section guidance, hazardous and solid waste rules, and vapor intrusion
- Strong computer skills and proficiency in the MS Office suite
- Experience with GIS, gINT, or Surfer a plus
- Must be self-starter, team oriented, with strong work ethic
- Must be well organized, detail oriented, and have excellent QA/QC skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Flexibility to work outside normal business hours, as required
- Field activities may require working in unfavorable weather conditions or with hazardous materials and in hazardous conditions - within the structure of Wood's safety program
- Must pass drug test, physical, and background check and must have a valid driver's license and satisfactory driving record in accordance with the Company's driving (Motor Vehicle Safety)
- Role may require frequent lifting of up to 50 lbs
- 40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER Certification with current 8-hour refresher is preferred but not required - Wood will provide all necessary training for the selected candidate, as applicable
