The Optical Techniques Branch is seeking a highly motivated Research Physicist/Electrical Engineer to work in the Fiber Photonics Section to develop state-of-the-art fiber optic sensing techniques and instrumentation for applications in ocean metrology. The Fiber Photonics Section conducts research into novel fiber optic and photonic devices and sensors. Research areas in the section include optically pumped magnetometry, Rydberg atom based electrometry, distributed sensing based on Brillouin, Rayleigh and Bragg scattering and laser based sensing, fiber optic shock wave diagnostics and fiber optic interferometry. The Naval Research Laboratory conducts research in a broad range of scientific and engineering disciplines of interest to the Navy. Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree, preferably a PhD, in Physics, Applied Physics, or Electrical Engineering is strongly desired
  • Experience in optical physics, electromagnetic measurements or optoelectronics
  • Specific experience in Labview, Matlab, Comsol, electronic design and testing, electronic instrumentation and control and/or prototype development would be beneficial
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team and may be required to participate in off-site tests
  • Ability to publish research in open literature and attend conferences is strongly encouraged
