Overview / Responsibilities

Wood Environment & Infrastructure Solutions has an opening for a Mid-Level Geologist in our Fresno, CA office to provide environmental consulting services in support of public and private clientele. This position requires an individual with effective communication skills as significant client, agency, public, and team interactions are expected. Candidates should be self-motivated and able to work on projects with variable complexity with the desire and ability to mentor and build a strong support team. This position includes both office and field work on project sites in and out of California.

Key Responsibilities

  • Works directly with senior-level personnel in interpreting the actual needs of individual clients
  • Determines required scope and level of effort of project work, including the degree of completeness and precision to which project elements should be addressed
  • Coordinates site activities with contractors, subcontractors, agency personnel and client representatives
  • Exercises independent professional judgment not subject to close review
  • Maintains a high level of communications skill, with emphasis on the preparation of clear and concise written reports
  • Demonstrates a high level of competence in directing and managing large single-disciplined projects and/or small to moderate sized multi-disciplined projects
  • Provides technical direction to and mentors subordinate staff
  • Responsible for ensuring the Firm's administrative and financial policies and procedures as well as the methods and procedures specific to his/her specific discipline are followed
  • Represents Wood and interacts in a professional manner with client and subcontractor representatives while on field assignments
  • Understands, applies and oversees safety requirements in the field

Skills / Qualifications

  • 5 - 8 years of related work experience required
  • Bachelor's Degree in geology or related field required; Master's Degree desirable
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills required
  • Formal project management training desirable; internal PM training required if managing projects
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with contractors required
  • Ability to communicate clearly with on-site contractors, supervisor or Project Manager regarding work assignments required
  • Experience working with drilling and excavation contractors
  • Experience preparing soil boring and well installation/destruction permits
  • Experience using the Unified Soil Classification System (ASTM standard D2488-17) for logging soil boring and/or test pit logging. Preparing boring or test pit logs
  • Groundwater and/or unsaturated zone well installation experience
  • Groundwater well development experience
  • Experience installing 500 foot or deeper wells desirable
  • Experience in interpretation bore hole geophysics desirable
  • Ability to produce and interpret chemical concentration-time charts, groundwater hydrographs, groundwater potentiometric surface maps, geochemistry plots using stiff and piper diagrams, and chemical iso-concentration maps
  • Ability to interpret hydrogeologic data and prepare cross-sections and fence diagrams containing geologic data, chemical data, and groundwater data
