About the opportunity

Jacobs has developed one of the leading and longest-standing geo-environmental consultancy capabilities in the UK, with over 450 geologically-focussed scientists and engineers delivering practical and innovative solutions to ground-related problems. Our diverse range of disciplines in this team includes contaminated land assessment/remediation, hydrogeology, geophysics, geomorphology, geotechnical engineering, tunnelling and engineering geology, all of which benefit from our "One Jacobs" approach to business working harmoniously with other disciplines for innovation and efficiency.

We are continuing to grow the depth and breadth of the technical services that our geoscience and geo-engineering teams can provide for our clients. As a result, we are recruiting an experienced geo-environmental specialist to join our Land Quality team (within our Water & Environment business unit) to enhance our team strength in providing high quality geo-environmental advice to our clients. The role will require flexibility to work across a range of sectors: primarily focussing on Nuclear, but also contributing where required to Rail, Highways, Utilities and Water and also including other emergent sectors.

We have an enviable position as a trusted partner and framework supplier across most of the nuclear estate, and are a Tier 1 supplier of consultancy services to many of these, in the decommissioning, new build, waste and science sectors. Whilst the workload in UK is significant, our operation also supports an international growth strategy with colleagues and clients across mainland Europe and Scandinavia.

We need someone to help us to further enhance our strong corporate relationships with further depth in the field of geo-environmental engineering. You will work with our sales and operations teams to help identify and secure new work from existing frameworks, as well as manage the delivery of technical work that this activity generates. The role will comprise the following elements, with specific emphasis depending on the candidate's particular experience:

Technical Leadership:

  • Provision of high-quality assessments and interpretations of land quality or other ground conceptualisation including awareness of disciplines that influence land contamination remediation techniques within an infrastructure setting (e.g. geotechnical);
  • Specialist in Land Condition, or similar demonstrable level of expertise, with technical authority to sign-off key deliverable outputs to clients, which will provide robust solutions to enable projects to proceed without delays due to non-compliance;
  • Regionally focussed leadership of delivery of geo-environmental work for nuclear clients in Northwest England.
  • Lead project delivery including instructions for graduates and senior staff grades.
  • Communication - Engage with colleagues across Water & Environment (W&E) disciplines to enable a "One Jacobs" approach to delivery. Raise awareness of the W&E capability among broader business units.
  • Lateral thinking - Use the opportunity of working within Jacobs' large and diverse pool of skills to identify and capitalise on related areas or activities where cross-pollination of technologies can increase or add benefit to the business, e.g. utilities, ports & maritime, water, transportation etc.

Technical development:

  • Consider how our geo-science teams across the UK and Europe could be developed and where extra skills are needed
  • Advise on how best to take the business forwards to suit developing technologies, market needs and Jacobs projects
  • Lead or support change by working with operations leaders to adopt new technology, or implement changes in guidance, legislation or best practice.

Project work:

We expect all our senior technical geoscience staff to work on projects because that is the best way to bring about change (in terms of the success of project delivery and the skills we can offer):

  • Advise on or develop work scopes and specifications
  • Work with specialist contractors to ensure optimum methods of working
  • Critically assess geoscience data to assess if we agree the methods of processing and interpretation
  • Review results provided by contractor
  • Advise project teams on the meaning of the results, and the confidence we can place in the findings
  • Use the data to determine conceptual site models and recommendations for implications of project progress due to solving questions, or for remedial solutionsPresentation / communication of results to our colleagues and external clients

Business development:

Help win projects by differentiating our capability and experience from our competitors, in support of colleagues focussing on sales objectives.

The successful applicant will be based in the UK and travel across the various geoscience teams leveraging this expertise into projects and supporting staff development. They will report to Karen Young (Head of Discipline for Land Quality) and ultimately to Geoff Hood (Land Quality Business Lead). They will be working within the EMEA Land Quality team, a team of over 70 contamination specialists that provide strategic advice and innovative solutions to manage our clients' subsurface environmental liabilities. The successful applicant will be working closely with colleagues in our Critical Mission Solutions team, who service our nuclear sector clients, as well as other key teams such as our geotechnical, built environment and hydrogeology teams to provide robust, considered and well-rounded geo-environmental solutions.

Planned work pattern:

  • 50% billable initially starting on the nuclear and utilities projects and various other projects that require geo-environmental input;
  • 50% non-billable leadership duties:
    • 30% operational sales / profile raising specifically with our Nuclear clients (Sellafield, Dounreay, RWM & LLWR)
    • 20% technical leadership / staff development

The successful applicant will join at Associate Director grade, working a 40-hour week. The assumed location at this stage is our Manchester First Street office.

The individual we seek shall have a high level of technical competence, ideally with specific technical qualifications/certification appropriate to this field (e.g. SiLC/NQM SQP, CL:AIRE QP for example).
